Taking advantage of today's cloudy weather, I shot an outdoor set for Genshin Impact's Aether at this waterside outdoor location. I've expressed in many posts before that I wanted to pursue a natural style cosplay, so this time I completely gave up studio lighting and chose an open space where you can directly see the mountains and city skyline on the opposite bank.
Let's talk about the wig and flower crown first. Blonde hair color eats up a lot of light under natural sunlight—bright sun can easily make it look plasticky on camera. Instead, today's cloudy, diffuse light made the wig's sheen and texture layered just right. I styled the flower crown separately using pink, blue, and purple faux flowers without making it overly complex, mainly wanting a visual echo with the original design's flowy feel to add a bit of grounded journey flavor. Wearing it on top naturally gets blown crooked by the wind, so I had to constantly adjust and fix it during shooting breaks.
Next is the environment. The wind by the lake was really strong and unpredictable. During the shoot, that white-and-orange gradient cape acted practically like a weather vane, constantly blown all over the place, but precisely this "messiness" gave me a lot of snapshot inspiration. The second full-body photo was captured right when the wind picked up—the wind billowed the cape into a beautiful curve. Standing on the stone platform with a hand holding the flower crown, at that moment I truly experienced what it meant to "chase the wind." This kind of dynamic movement is hard to simulate with fans in a studio.
I also did some subtraction for makeup, skipping heavy eyeshadow and eyeliner, focusing instead on a clean base and dimensional facial contours. After all, a clean makeup look fits the "Traveler" vibe much better under outdoor natural light. I chose a daily matte shade for lips so it wouldn't steal the spotlight from the overall image.
In fact, before shooting this set, I considered many complex props and lighting setups, but later realized that for Aether cosplay from Genshin Impact, what touches people most is that dust-covered yet resolute state during the journey of exploration. So I focused as much as possible on natural expressions and body language. Among these photos, some show looking quietly at scenery, others chasing the wind and steps. I didn't need to force rigid poses; just standing by this waterside naturally brought me into that state of undergoing a journey.
Of course, outdoor shooting comes with many uncontrollable factors—like occasional passersby in the background, strong winds displacing hair and clothing, and the sharp stones on the platform hurting my feet. When standing or turning on the stones, I had to balance my center of gravity while keeping aesthetic form to avoid slipping. Looking back at the final shots, though, these small accidents became part of recording authenticity.
Today the water surface glistened, with the breeze carrying moisture and chill. Although it wasn't completely clear weather, the thickness and muted gray tones of the clouds added a cinematic feel to the image. Although the outfit shows a bit of midriff, the half-finger leather gloves, various hard armor elements, and golden patterns on the pant legs give it a strong techwear/functional style, creating great tension when blending with natural outdoor elements.
Finally, regarding this outdoor location shoot, what I want to convey is that a good cosplayer and a good piece of work aren't just about high fidelity to the original design, but rather delivering a natural expression tailored to the environment and lighting based on understanding the character's core. Thanks to all teammates and helpers today, allowing us to leave behind memories in the wind belonging to nature and the character.
