This Yao Guang cosplay project took over half a month from preparation to final execution. The greatest challenge of the studio shoot was faithfully recreating the iconic peacock blue and metallic accessories from the Honkai: Star Rail original artwork. Costume texture was paramount; to avoid making the accessories look cheap, all metal pieces featured a combined weathered and polished finish, which, paired with the deep-blue plush shawl, added rich visual layering. For makeup, I accentuated the under-eye blush and red lips, paired with blue colored contact lenses to best capture the commanding aura of an Onee-san cosplay. Because the intricate headwear had to be worn for extended periods, the wig's styling and securing were readjusted multiple times to ensure it could support the accessories without looking bulky.
For the set, I chose a warm-yellow wooden backdrop and carved openwork folding screens, utilizing the clash between warm ambient lighting and cool-toned clothing to heighten visual tension. During lighting, the key light was positioned at a high angle to one side, flawlessly defining the contours of the collarbones and shoulders while catching the sheen of the metallic chest piece. For the shoot, we used a Sony A7R6 camera body paired with a Sony FE 50-150mm F2 GM lens—a setup that performed impeccably in capturing image sharpness and color fidelity for Anime-style photography. The telephoto focal length offered immense advantages in compressing indoor space: scrolls, screens, and writing desks in the background blurred out naturally, allowing the subject to stand out prominently while crisply resolving even the delicate peacock feather textures and glitter along the skirt hem.
To showcase beauty from multiple angles, I experimented with varied poses. Seated poses were the primary focus this time. For instance, sitting on a plush blanket with legs crossed allowed the chains along the thigh to flatter my leg lines, although this posture required arching my insteps continuously, leaving my lower back aching over time. Shots holding a folding fan and calligraphy brush aimed to highlight the character's scholarly poise, though my knuckles grew slightly stiff from clutching props for so long. For the standing pose in high heels, capturing the exact moment the skirt flared up required swirling the dress repeatedly before the photographer could nail the perfect dynamic shot. Throughout the shoot, because the hem was so long, an assistant frequently helped arrange the train; those seemingly effortless cascading feather layers were actually positioned with meticulous care.
Post-processing color grading preserved the warm-yellow ambient glow, subdued the background, and brightened the teal and cyan-blue tones of the garment to make the peacock patterns pop. The eye makeup faded slightly under intense studio lighting, requiring four or five touch-ups. Overall, this Cosplay photoshoot conveys an air of dignity infused with allure. Although physically demanding and testing my endurance, seeing the flawless harmony of light, shadow, and tactile textures in the final images made every hardship worthwhile. The upcoming retouching will further refine skin texture, aiming to perfectly preserve this majestic, opulent moment in Anime-style photography. Every refined detail serves the ultimate visual presentation, and I can't wait to see the finalized photos!
