[Kamisato Ayaka cosplay] A Lens Dialogue with Paper Umbrellas and Folding Fans in the Night Shoot

For the second day of the Firefly Anime Expo, we selected a night scene to shoot this styling. The first four finished photos are the ones we were most satisfied with, focusing on showcasing the character's costume texture in low-light environments and the dynamic moments of prop interaction.

The costume centers around a palette of white and blue, with thick white plush fabric spliced onto the neckline and cuffs. During night shooting, such light-colored materials are easily affected by ambient light, so we designed the lighting angles in advance to cast a subtle rim light along the furry edges under backlighting, preserving garment detail layers without overexposing.

In terms of props, the folding fan features a printed white-and-blue fan leaf with rich color saturation under the light. For the first shot, the photographer deliberately used side-backlighting to accentuate the fan's structure and trace the highlight edge along the character's profile. For subsequent shots, we switched to a larger oil-paper umbrella with crisp ribs, patterned with sakura and plum blossoms, and trimmed with slender purple tassels around the edge. When holding the umbrella during shooting, careful arm exertion was required—maintaining a relaxed, natural grip while ensuring the umbrella's angle didn't block key lighting, preventing the face from falling into deep shadow.

The headpiece design is quite elaborate: a large deep-blue bow atop the head accented with white feathers, paired with pink knots and tassels behind both ears. The clash of dark navy, pure white, and soft pink adds a playful contrast to this cool-toned White-haired girl styling. The wig is a luminous silver-blue long straight wig with blunt bangs; such light-toned wigs can easily make facial features appear flat. For makeup, we chose bright blue contact lenses to sharpen the gaze, accentuating the lower eyelids with fine glitter gems that shimmered with a delicate glint whenever the strobe flashed.

Capturing a Night portrait truly tests photographic expertise. The venue environment was dim, and relying solely on a single light source would yield harsh shadows. We selected a softbox paired with a low-power speedlight for fill lighting, mostly positioning the light source slightly above and to the side. This provided highlights atop the wig while bathing the face in soft, even illumination. With heavy foot traffic at the convention, the lighting was occasionally blocked by passing attendees, so we spent considerable time waiting for clear light paths and calibrating camera angles.

Throughout the shoot, I explored varied poses to better convey the character's demeanor. When waving the folding fan, wrist tension had to be controlled so the fan face unfolded naturally; when holding the oil-paper umbrella, using its silhouette to partially conceal the body created an enigmatic, half-veiled mood. The photographer also experimented with diverse high and low angles—for instance, the slightly lower angle in Photo 3 effectively elongated the neckline, making the overall visual look slender and graceful.

Through this night session, I gained firsthand experience in expressing light-colored stylings within low-light settings. Without needing overly complex facial expressions, the harmony of gaze, posture, and props alone brought out the character's inherent cool, serene elegance. This set achieved our expectations in lighting interaction and costume texture, capturing the joy and passion of Genshin Impact Anime-style photography in the night glow of Kamisato Ayaka cosplay.
