Today I completed this Hu Tao photoshoot in the woods. Getting straight to the point, let me share the details and insights behind these photos.
First, let's talk about the overall outfit matching. This time I chose a jacket with dark brown as the main tone, paired with a bright red collar inside. As the character's iconic color-blocking design, the contrast between red and dark shades really complements skin tones, allowing the whole outfit to quickly grab visual focus in the autumn woods. The golden four-leaf ornament frog button on the chest is a striking detail, and there are delicate dark-gold patterns along the coat sleeves and hem edge. Although these elements seem subtle, they offer rich texture in close-up shots. To balance comfortable wear with a structured silhouette, the jacket fabric has a certain thickness, showing a soft matte texture under the natural light of the forest.
The wig styling took a lot of effort. Dark hair paired with moderate bangs and long hair draped over the shoulders, combined with eye makeup, presents an overall vibe that is both lively and slightly mysterious. For makeup, I opted for orange-toned red lips paired with slightly winged eyeliner, making the whole facial expression look more vivid, while light-colored contact lenses enhanced the extraordinary feel of a 2D character.
Props and accessories were also an important part of this shoot. The hat is a black bowler hat, with the biggest highlight being the white talisman paper directly in front of the brim, featuring hand-simulated black runes. To fit the character design, we specifically adjusted the tilt angle of the talisman. The white little ghost prop hanging on the tree branch in the picture was specially prepared for this scene. Its long, slender tail hangs from the branch, and its red-and-white patterns add a touch of playfulness to the scene, serving as a fun composition element. Additionally, my nails were painted solid black, paired with several silver rings on my hands; though small, these details served as great embellishments for hand close-ups.
Let's discuss the arrangement of poses and expressions. The closing-one-eye wink expression in the photo is a moment I personally love; this slightly playful and cunning smile perfectly fits the character's mischievous yet reliable personality. The open-arm pose conveys a sense of casting a spell or catching ghosts, while fully displaying hand accessories and rings in the shot. Another composition extending hands toward the lens utilizes wide-angle perspective to shorten the distance to the camera, creating an immersive atmosphere as if interacting with you.
Natural light was used during the shooting, combined with a large-aperture lens to blur the background woods, turning the unique mottled tree shadows and glow of autumn into beautiful bokeh. This slightly warm, soft light resonated well with the character's red-and-black color scheme. The overall editing idea focused on natural restoration and clarity, preserving the texture of the costume fabric without over-smoothing the skin, hoping viewers can feel a realistic and dedicated character recreation.
As a pure cosplay practice, every step from preparing costume props to outdoor shooting was full of fun. Being able to capture the 2D daily life feel of this character in a real wild environment felt extremely rewarding. Given the chance, I will try more style expressions across different settings in the future.
