The field mission log of the leader of the Lampbearer Investigation Squad, choosing a spacious indoor environment for this shoot. My setting for this shoot is "Illuga". In the context of Genshin Impact, as a guide leading travelers through difficult paths, the overall temperament needs to balance authority and gentleness. Since the character often encounters lost people in the lore, the performance in front of the lens shouldn't be too sharp or aggressive, but rather present a reliable sense of companionship.
In terms of costume preparation, this outfit has very high demands for details. First is the white fur collar at the neckline, made of faux rabbit fur that is soft to the touch but visually fluffy, which beautifully holds up the volume of the entire upper body. The grey-purple fabric of the coat itself has a certain thickness, preventing creases easily and draping nicely when worn. The handling of accessories is even more crucial; the black leather straps on the shoulders and chest feature a multi-buckle design. These metallic pieces and leather belts interweave to beautifully outline the character's body proportions and sense of strength.
The prop is a vital part of character building this time. The giant lantern held in my hand features a yellow disk structure and a weathered grey metallic texture on the surface. During the painting process of the entire prop, to avoid cheap plastic reflections, I specially requested a semi-matte topcoat to make it look like it has more marks of battlefield wear and tear. Although this prop is quite heavy to hold, it happened to help me find the steady posture a guardian should have, rather than looking weightless.
Makeup and the wig are the keys to the success of the anime-style photography. The silver-grey wig is harder to handle than a daily black one, requiring extra teasing and setting treatment to create this slightly fluffy yet layered styling. The red gradient at the ends of the hair is the highlight of the entire hairstyle, adding a touch of warmth and agility to the overall cool-toned outfit. For the eye makeup, I chose blue contact lenses that can reflect clear light, which, combined with detailed contouring, makes the gaze look clearer and more focused.
During the shooting phase, I intentionally conceptualized this first-person perspective selfie. In this cover photo, the camera looks down slightly, paired with a guiding hand gesture, as if I am extending an invitation to the traveler in front of the screen: "No need to worry about the bumpy road, my lamp will light the way ahead for you." In terms of lighting setup, I didn't use overly complex lighting, but utilized the natural diffused light from the window as the main light source, supplemented by rim lighting, creating subtle highlights on the edges of the fur collar, which enhanced the three-dimensional depth and spatial sense of the frame.
Actually, during daily conventions and offline events, the character of "Illuga" often encounters situations where people ask for directions, which subconsciously gave me a deeper empathy for this character. A lampbearer is not just a title, but more like a tangible manifestation of a duty. We walk on different paths in reality, and sometimes we also need a beam of light to guide our direction. Through this cosplay sharing work, I hope to not only showcase the beauty of the costume but also convey the helpful, calm, and composed positive traits of the character to the people who see the photos.
After all the post-processing and early preparations were completed, looking back at this set of images indeed brings a sense of satisfaction. Cosplay is not just about imitating appearance, but interpreting and reshaping the character's spirit. Every time I put on the wig and costume, a wonderful sense of connecting with an alternative world arises in my heart. This is why I have always felt that for characters with deep background stories, there is still so much we can do. Freezing that moment of gaze and posture through the camera transforms the character setting in the text into a visualized frame, which I believe is the greatest meaning of this hobby. Despite the physical fatigue of the shooting process, seeing the final photos makes all the effort completely worth it.
