[Misaki cosplay] Blue Archive: Eastern Charm and Hardcore Contrast

For this shoot, I experimented with blending retro Chinese style elements with hardcore firearms and props, setting the overall tone to balance Eastern charm with modern strength.

For the costume selection, this deep navy sleeveless qipao is the core. It isn't a purely traditional cut, featuring numerous modern modifications instead. The subtle dragon jacquard embroidered in gold thread across the bodice looks exceptionally textured under warm indoor lighting, while the teal-blue accent around the collar perfectly softens the heaviness of the dark fabric. Additionally, the long black-and-white pinstripe trench coat worn over it is the crowning touch; draping it halfway off the shoulder or wearing it open instantly relaxes the posture, transforming the look from a stiff formal gown into something carrying an edge of street rebellion. The hairstyle features sleek, straight long hair with blunt bangs and two distinct side buns, which, paired with the large butterfly ornament and curved silver headpiece, breaks up any visual monotony.

For the makeup, I deliberately elongated the eyeliner and defined the lower lash line, finishing with a matte true-red lipstick to project a cool, slightly aloof expression in front of the lens that resonates with the submachine-gun-wielding character setting.

The set was filled with diverse props: beyond the highly accurate submachine gun prop, the scene featured vintage suitcases, blue-and-white porcelain vases, and curio shelves decorated with dried flowers. Gripping heavy weaponry within a space steeped in classical Eastern elements creates a striking contrast that forms the core charm of this photoshoot.

The biggest challenge of this shoot was making the gun look natural in hand. Initially, holding it felt stiff, like lugging dead weight. Gradually adjusting my grip—pulling the stock back, letting the barrel slant naturally downward, and leaning my center of gravity slightly—made the stance look fluid and organic.

Finding the right angle for the seated pose in Photo 1 took considerable time. Because of the qipao's high slit, significant leg line is exposed, and an improper sitting posture could easily look awkward or reveal too much. Straightening the spine while keeping knees pressed together and angled to the side elongated the leg lines without sacrificing the fitted elegance of the qipao.

Switching to standing poses, the oversized striped trench coat provided immense expressive freedom. Sweeping one side of the coat back to reveal the qipao and leg lines beneath while holding the gun or resting it against my leg instantly evoked the feeling of an operative embarking on a journey or preparing for combat.

Lighting on set was another key pillar in building atmosphere. The warm glow cast from the yellow Chinese paper lantern on the right softened body contours while carving crisp light-and-shadow contrast across the cheeks and fabric folds, enriching the overall cinematic texture.

Wearing a qipao truly tests one's physique and places high demands on core control. Maintaining steady posture is essential, as the slightest slouch instantly drains the subject's energy and spirit. Furthermore, managing the high slit requires deliberate leg movements that are not just aesthetically pleasing, but careful and composed under tension.

The submachine gun prop is particularly noteworthy; although a model, it possessed a satisfyingly weighty realism in hand. During standing shots, balancing body weight while preventing the barrel from knocking against nearby porcelain vases or table edges was crucial. The photographer suggested angling the barrel slightly downward while gripping the midsection of the firearm with one hand, which projected an effortless composure while highlighting clean silhouette lines.

As an experimental style crossover, pairing a qipao with heavy firearms and a striped coat created an eclectic look that surpassed expectations in showcasing an independent, fierce female persona. The retro atmosphere of the set sparks endless imagination—evoking a resolute wanderer armed with her own weaponry and unwavering resolve in a turbulent era.
