Coinciding with the National Day holiday, I brought this World-Painter Hana cosplay look to the Lanying Anime Convention at the Jinan Shungeng International Convention and Exhibition Center, capturing this set of convention photos.
This time I chose the original skin design, featuring an overall style that is highly magnificent and brilliantly colorful. For the makeup, I specially paired it with character-appropriate red-toned eye makeup and blended lips. Combined with the iconic black straight bangs and double hair buns adorned with a purple bow hair accessory on top, I strove to recreate that dreamy yet slightly mysterious aura.
In terms of clothing, the large-scale color-blocking and patchwork heavily test the production craftsmanship. The pure white inner piece is paired with red and yellow piping; the outer layer consists of large blocks of highly saturated royal blue, bright red, and vivid yellow fabrics. The fabric's inherent sheen delivers an excellent texture under the overhead lighting at the convention venue. Accompanied by white flower embroidery on the cloth, the overall visual impact is exceptionally strong.
To pursue the character's sense of lightness, the tailoring of this costume is relatively loose, especially with exceptionally wide sleeves that flutter in the wind when walking. Furthermore, to align with the character's setting, I chose to appear barefoot, treating the skin on my legs with a pink-purple gradient mark to simulate the character's unique petal patterns.
The foot traffic at the convention was quite heavy on the shooting day. Fortunately, we found a relatively dark spot inside the exhibition hall. Paired with the harsh, spotlight-like lighting inherent to the venue, the resulting shadows were highly three-dimensional. This not only highlighted the pure white texture of the skin but also made the vibrant colors of the costume richer. That low-key atmosphere under high contrast perfectly aligned with the character's tranquility in the game when controlling the scroll amidst absolute silence.
Since these are convention photos, the equipment and lighting are certainly not as perfect as a studio shoot. The props used this time were also relatively simple—a slender black circular rod and a small red tray—adding some compositional embellishments to my hands without affecting the display of the costume.
For convention photos, finding a clean background in a noisy environment is crucial. This time, the photographer understood my intention very well and picked the camera angles perfectly. The few low-angle shots clearly depicted the character's silhouette and the flowing nature of the costume, while the sitting photos focused more on the atmospheric feel and a lazy aura. From the wig styling to the final barefoot details, this look took quite a long time to prepare, and I feel very comforted seeing the final results.
A comic con is a grand gathering for anime lovers. Being able to meet everyone while wearing the costume of a beloved character is inherently a great experience. The atmosphere at this Jinan Lanying Anime Convention was fantastic; everyone was highly enthusiastic, and I encountered quite a few passing friends who recognized the character's origin.
Although sitting on the ground for a long time made it a bit cold due to being barefoot, it was completely acceptable for the sake of the overall image effect. I also adjusted the volume of the wig to ensure it wouldn't look top-heavy in camera, instead forming a great visual balance with the wide hem of the costume.
The most direct feeling of shooting convention photos is the sense of reality; the light and the surrounding environment can give this character a feeling of coming alive in real life.
The makeup this time emphasized a translucent feel while highlighting the eyeliner and the fullness of the lips, elongating the visual focus. In terms of image presentation, it leaned closer to the texture of a 2D anime character compared to everyday makeup. The convention atmosphere always inspires new shooting ideas, including how to utilize the venue's existing facilities to find a comfort zone for camera presence—these are all highly valuable production experiences.
Overall, the results of this World-Painter Hana cosplay convention photos set reproduced the concept in my mind quite well. Thanks also to the friends on-site who recognized me, making me feel that all these preparations were well worth the effort.
