This official After Amaterasu's awakening cosplay photoshoot from Onmyoji finally caught the final deadline of the event! This set was completed together with photographer Luoluo, makeup artist Zuilan, VFX artist Junjiu, and the Luoying Visual Studio team. After having a blast at the offline convention, we immediately dived into the studio; physically exhausted as we were, everyone's creative energy remained remarkably high.
In terms of wardrobe, this ensemble for Amaterasu features immense layering. The upper half is a white wide-sleeved top crafted from exceptionally lightweight fabric, allowing the sleeves to drape naturally or flutter gracefully with movement. The lower half features an elongated gown splicing deep blue and magenta-red fabrics, boasting impeccable drape. The high-slit cut of the skirt elegantly frames leg lines whether walking or seated, though it was tricky to anchor during the shoot—demanding readjustment after even the slightest shift. The gilded adornments, the gemstone necklace across the chest, and the intricate headpieces all had to be fastened securely to the wig to prevent any wardrobe malfunctions on camera.
Props and special visual effects were the centerpiece of this photoshoot. The levitating golden mythical beast heads, cross-starburst magical implements, purple flame mask overhead, and the colossal golden halo behind the figure in the final frame actually had very little physical backing on the studio set—in fact, many elements lacked physical props entirely. During the shoot, I stood before green screens and simple rigging, relying wholly on imagination to coordinate body language with the path of the lights. The post-production craftsmanship by Junjiu was truly masterful, employing extensive rotoscoping and VFX compositing to deliver a stunning visual impact wrapped in sacred resonance and circular magic arrays.
For the makeup, Zuilan created an intensely cool, aloof look, accentuating crimson blending around the eyes and sculpted facial dimensions. To match the dignified aura of a high deity, the base foundation was kept pristine and fair. Through photographer Luoluo's lens, the rim backlighting, starlight flares, and shimmering golden motes of dust were captured to perfection.
Throughout the cosplay journey, portraying Amaterasu as a sovereign deity of Takamagahara meant facial expressions could not be overly dramatic; one must sustain an icy detachment that looks down upon the mortal realm. Before the lens, my gaze had to stay steady, and gestures needed to be deliberate yet infused with latent power. The three-quarter seated posture in Photo 4 was something I developed through trial and error: crossing the legs highlighted the flowing drape of the high-slit skirt, while resting barefoot on the luminous magic circle required engaging my core and keeping the spine upright to preserve regal carriage—especially under the intense, warm-amber rim light where any slight slackening would compromise the commanding presence.
From wrapping up the convention to stepping into the studio, behind this collection lies the round-the-clock dedication of our entire crew. Without unnecessary complexities, everyone gathered out of shared passion for this character and world, turning mental imagery into tangible art step by step—a creative process that in itself was immensely thrilling.
