Presenting this Onmyoji Kinnara cosplay set today! To align with the theme of the Onmyoji Glamorous Costume & Makeup Contest, I experimented with blending live-action photography and 2D aesthetics, handcrafting an illustration style imitation poster from scratch.
Immense effort went into the wardrobe and props. The palette centers on white, black, orange, and red: wide bell sleeves on the top, an intricate black-and-orange corset belt around the waist, and a ruffled skirt. Styling the wig was the most taxing step, requiring airy volume and defined tiers, while the feathered halo headpiece overhead demanded specialized anchoring to keep it from slipping during poses. I recalibrated the body strapping repeatedly to faithfully recreate the waistline and silhouette from the character art.
Prop-wise, the glowing white musical instrument cradled in my arms serves as the visual centerpiece; due to its substantial bulk, holding it engaged my core continuously. Beyond the main instrument, floating mini-instruments with glowing wings were rigged on monofilament lines and composited in post. The little pink-and-white fox prop beside me was darling—the touch of it wearing spectacles while playing the violin added the ultimate charming highlight.
Lighting featured a warm crimson backdrop complemented by edge backlighting to emulate the lavish grandeur of promotional key art. Since this aimed to be an illustration style imitation, I deliberately held stylized Anime cosplay postures and expressions—such as balancing on one leg with a slightly tilted chin. The makeup emphasized brilliant blue contacts to harmonize with blonde hair, paired with a luminous porcelain base and bright pops of blush and lip gloss to elevate vitality. Transparent strings on the main lute were specially treated to catch light refractions, and a fan was set up to billow the garments for kinetic flair.
Post-processing was even more grueling than the shoot itself. To ensure human skin textures didn't clash against an illustrative style, I kept natural facial shading while painting in luminous glows, halos, wing outlines, and starlight particle motes. The hardest part of crafting an illustration style imitation poster lies in edge integration: preserving textile creases and hair sheen while ensuring ambient effects look painterly requires endless blending mode adjustments. The layout drew inspiration from official game promotional posters, and clearing out text clutter let the visuals breathe with purity.
This project took significant time from planning to final render. Because it was conceived as a poster, framing left ample negative space for background lighting and magical effects. A slight low-angle shot elongated the figure, matching the perspective found in in-game character illustrations. Matting the subject and compositing the backdrop was meticulous, especially around sheer sleeve fabrics and fine flyaways. It felt like developing a comprehensive visual branding package—managing styling, props, photography, and graphic layout hands-on. Bringing 2D designs to life step by step in the 3D world is incredibly rewarding, and I hope this stands as a satisfying submission for the contest.
