Today, I shot this at-home style JK portrait at Xingman Yinghua Studio, with He behind the camera. The overarching concept was a healing, cozy domestic atmosphere, so I chose a classic white sailor suit paired with a black pleated skirt. The light-blue collar and star necktie exude a strong school uniform vibe; paired with dark twintails, red hair accessories, and white stockings, the overall look is exceptionally clean and crisp.
The studio's set dressing was remarkably detailed. Built across tatami mat flooring, the backdrop featured dark wood bookshelves and sheer white curtains. The shelves held a vintage twin-speaker radio, an antique camera, a sailboat model, and foreign-language books, with the walls collaged in black-and-white manga storyboards. The most eye-catching elements were two oversized brown teddy bears—one in a blue-and-white striped sweater, the other in a red-and-white argyle knit—infusing the entire space with warmth and playful nostalgia.
Throughout the shoot, I tested various poses to showcase the garment's tailoring and composition layers. The standing pose with hands on hips cleanly displays the pleat structure and the sailor suit's silhouette. To add interactivity, I tried lounging prone on the tatami mats. Resting my chin in both hands or a single hand drew direct focus to facial expressions while naturally flattering the lines of the white stockings.
My personal favorite is the shot reaching one hand out toward the lens. Leveraging near-far perspective, the outstretched arm and direct eye contact deliver immersive visual tension. Reclining on my side with calves playfully kicked up felt effortless, pairing with the floral pillow nearby to evoke a relaxed, languid lounging state.
For lighting, photographer He utilized natural light filtering through the right window, softening the whites of the sailor suit and stockings. The red digital readout on the retro radio contrasted against the dark wood grain of the shelves, enriching the palette. The delicate texture of the white stockings showed through exquisitely against the woven tatami mats.
The shoot went seamlessly, merging home comfort, anime aesthetics, and uniform style into an effortless synergy. Without convoluted props—just tatami mats, plushies, and candid postures—we captured the ideal cozy home ambiance.
