The key focus of this Rei Ayanami cosplay styling was capturing the cool elegance and splendor of the Language of flowers series. During preparation, I had this black-and-purple Gothic style dress custom-made, as I was deeply drawn to the dark, flower-themed aesthetic of the original design.
To match the character's persona, I emphasized a cool, fair complexion in my makeup, using a subtle pink eyeshadow paired with the light blue short hair to create an authentic 2D anime feel without looking jarring. In terms of costume materials, the black lace on the top is exceptionally sheer and delicate. The halter-neck cut demands clean neck and shoulder lines, so I paid close attention to posture and shoulder tension during the shoot. To evoke Rei Ayanami's doll-like, unemotional aura, I deliberately minimized facial expressions, keeping my gaze focused, serene, and ethereal.
The skirt features a high-low hemline, with layered black tulle draped over a purple lining. When walking, it moves like a shifting dark blossom, so I pinned three soft pinkish-purple flowers onto the skirt as accents to break up any heaviness. The White stockings on the legs are a classic pairing, looking clean and luminous against the blue backdrop, while the high heels further elongated the leg lines.
During the shoot, Dadaliguan suggested making creative use of shadows cast on the wall—since straightforward studio portraits are quite common, utilizing shadows adds visual narrative and dynamic tension. The first photo features lifting the hem from the front, showcasing the costume's front details and overall silhouette; the second is a backward glance while balancing on one foot, where the leg movement and swirling hem give a graceful ballerina vibe; the third features an arm raised high, purely using the shadow to create a unique visual extension; and the fourth captures a serene seated pose on the floor, forming a calm contrast with the dynamic poses before it.
What made me happiest was that our pure blue background matched the classic sci-fi cool tones of Neon Genesis Evangelion perfectly, sparking a marvelous chemistry with my black-and-purple Language of flowers dress. Although this outfit is somewhat heavy—especially with the multiple layers in the skirt, making seated shots a bit tricky—the resulting lighting, atmosphere, and costume fit made every effort worthwhile.
This shoot not only achieved a faithful character recreation but also captured the tranquil silence I had envisioned. The session went very smoothly with a high yield of great shots, and I'm grateful to the photographer for constantly working to find angles that highlighted these details. I hope you can feel that otherworldly blend of icy detachment and gentle warmth in this photo set, and immerse yourself in the story behind the character.
