These convention photos of Yamada Ryo are finally sorted and ready! Cosplaying Ryo has been a long-time personal wish of mine, and to present her best state at the convention, I poured quite a lot of effort into hair and makeup beforehand. Anyone familiar with Bocchi the Rock! knows that Ryo has a deeply distinctive personality: on the outside, she looks cool, deadpan, and indifferent to everything, but underneath she has that signature quirky, opportunistic, and delightfully cheeky streak. So when applying makeup, I deliberately drew the eyeliner with a flat, slightly downward angle to channel a subtly jaded, world-weary gaze, paired with grey-pink contact lenses to match that extraordinary 2D anime feel. Trimming the wig was equally delicate work; to craft the natural ahoge tuft and dimensional layering, I compared it repeatedly against official references and adjusted the positioning of the black hairpin down to the millimeter to maximize fidelity.

Costume-wise, I went with her classic white collared shirt and navy pleated skirt. The thin black ribbon tie at the collar is the absolute highlight—it must be tied with enough slack to drape nonchalantly rather than looking stiff. Layering a long-sleeve black undershirt beneath the short-sleeve white button-up was a bit stifling amidst the midsummer convention heat, but I powered through for the overall silhouette. For the lower half, Black stockings paired with brown chunky-heeled loafers not only elongated leg proportions, but also fit Yamada Ryo's relaxed, slightly vintage everyday aesthetic. Walking in loafers all day definitely took a toll on my feet, but seeing how gorgeous the texture looked paired with the Black stockings made every step worthwhile.

These were captured at the Chengdu WorldLine Anime Expo, and the turnout was genuinely massive—wall-to-wall crowds made finding a clean background without wandering attendees incredibly tough. Luckily, I brought along a black folding stepladder, an absolute game-changer for convention shoots! Perching on the ladder elevated my perspective, bypassing the crowded floor while unlocking diverse camera angles. The first two shots seated on the ladder were taken outdoors under soft overcast skies, which diffused the light beautifully and lent my skin a luminous, clear texture. For the standing shots later on, to capture Ryo's trademark nonchalance toward her surroundings, I kept an aloof deadpan expression, crossed my arms, and let my gaze space out slightly.

The most dramatic hiccup of the day: I actually spotted a Bocchi-chan cosplayer on the floor and wanted to pull her in for a duo photo swap! Unfortunately, the venue was so packed that the mobile network crashed completely—messages wouldn't send and friend requests couldn't load. By the time a faint signal returned, Bocchi-chan had already vanished into the sea of people; missing out on shooting together was truly a bummer. Still, I'm very happy with how these solo convention shots turned out. For me, cosplaying is far more than just wearing an outfit—it's about channeling the character's soul and presence before the lens. I hope this photo set, bathed in authentic convention lighting, lets everyone feel the spirit of Ryo, perpetually plotting how to borrow cash and snack on weeds.
