[Wakaba Mutsumi cosplay] Arknights × Ave Mujica: Marionette's Id Styling

Bringing Wakaba Mutsumi's 'Marionette's Id' look to life demanded an incredible amount of energy, from pre-production through to the shoot itself. The collaborative concept between Arknights and Ave Mujica inherently carries intense theatrical tension, and the theme of a puppeted 'Id' opened up vast creative possibilities. When conceptualizing this cosplay piece, my core objective was to express that fragile, suspended state in a static frame—conveying the feeling of being pulled by invisible puppet strings while quietly awakening to one's own underlying self-awareness.

Makeup was the highest priority. To honor the character design, I chose bright yellow color contacts paired with a relatively pale base and softly smudged shading along the outer corners of the eyes. This gave my gaze an ethereal yet unavoidably chilling intensity. For the wig, I selected pure white long straight hair with blunt bangs, carefully preserving the strands' natural fall so that as I moved or lowered my head, the locks draped cleanly over my shoulders. I also wore pointed elf ear prosthetics with a touch of soft pink blushing on the tips, lending a grounded, organic touch to the fantasy elements.

The layering of the headpiece and garments tested the stability of the entire ensemble. The oversized, wide-brimmed black hat was quite voluminous, adorned with multiple tiers of ruffled black lace, scattered pearls, and a long white plush plume cascading down one side. To balance the headweight, the top incorporated puffed sleeves and oversized flared cuffs in crisp white. The exaggerated white sheer cuffs clashed sharply with the black lace and translucent mesh of the bodice. A black leather cincher at the waist and a delicate lace choker around the neck further emphasized the sharp edge of the Gothic style.

For the lower half, a multi-layered skirt was chosen to complement the composition. The dark overskirt features ornate lace along the hem, which naturally fans out when seated on the floor to reveal the white ruffled underlayers and a deep teal petticoat. I paired this with black polka-dot stockings, accented by a black garter band with a golden star charm on the thigh. Combined with heels, whether seated or slightly extending a leg, it noticeably elongated my lower silhouette. The sheer texture of the Black stockings under cool lighting added a mature, sultry elegance while granting the subject greater dimensional depth.

The set was built around a black-and-white checkered floor, framed by white gothic archways and floral arrangements, with cool blue ambient light rendering the satin and lace of the gown in exquisite detail. I invested a lot of thought into the poses. One was a half-body shot, gently resting a hand against my chest with eyes lowered in quiet, suppressed tension. Another was sitting on the floor with one arm raised upward, fingers slightly curved and torso leaning back, as if unseen marionette strings were actively tugging at my joints. To avoid stiffness, I continually chased that delicate balance between rigid muscle resistance and external pull. Between takes, I kept conferring with the photographer on angles and fingertip nuances to ensure every pose communicated this styling's singular mood. Turning a flat design into a breathing visual narrative is truly where the deepest magic of cosplay lies.
