Bringing this race queen Kirara concept to life took about half a month from preparation to wrap. For the outfit, we chose a faux leather fabric with a delicate sheen, pouring tons of effort into recreating that structured, sleek racing suit aesthetic from 2D animation. The cropped midriff top really tested core strength—I had to keep my abs engaged the entire time to pair seamlessly with the high-waisted pleated skirt and visually elongate my proportions. The black-and-white checkerboard pattern along the skirt was applied meticulously, and the floral emblem prints alongside the 'RACING' streamer at the waist were reinforced so the ribbons kept their dynamic shape while running with the flag.
The shoot took place at the AZ Comic Con in Hangzhou. Since these were on-site convention photos, roaming crowds in the background were naturally a major challenge. Fortunately, the photographer's mastery of light and shadow was absolutely god-tier! He excels at using dramatic rim backlighting; whether standing or seated, the powerful backlight cast from behind traced a luminous halo along the outer strands of my hair, making me pop vividly against the dim venue hall. To harmonize with this cool-toned illumination, the black-and-white contrast on the checkered flag had to be exceptionally sharp, so we specifically picked a wrinkle-free fabric.
My personal favorites are the shots seated on the white faux-fur rug. The massive plush tail actually carried considerable weight; keeping it draping naturally while holding poised postures demanded constant subtle engagement from my lower back. The over-the-knee Black stockings with garters were the true soul of the look, and they were perfect since the venue floor was quite chilly. To coordinate with the Black stockings, I picked white platform sneakers, which not only added height but also balanced the maturity of the stockings with sporty vigor. Wearing green colored contacts in tight close-ups enlarged my eyes and gave them a playful feline sparkle. The checkerboard cat-ear headband required numerous bobby pins to stay firmly in place, which honestly pulled my scalp quite tight.
Waving the flag was a true workout for the arms, as the fabric paired with a telescoping metal pole had noticeable heft. To make the flag billow dramatically, I had to twist from the waist and snap the pole forcefully, all while keeping my facial expression composed into that subtly proud cat-like smirk. For a few shots, I slid onto my knees or crouched directly on the floor; though the movement was intense, capturing the kinetic flow of the skirt and tail yielded incredibly satisfying results. The makeup steered clear of heavy contouring in favor of a clean, translucent base, focusing on elongated eyeliner to bring out a relaxed, cat-like gaze.
As the standout centerpiece, the checkered flag's strong contrast against the blue-and-white racing suit was emphasized through dynamic diagonal framing to keep compositions striking. The convention floor was rock hard, and those knee-slide poses definitely left my knees bruised and red, but seeing how gorgeous the photos turned out made every bruise worthwhile. Though an all-day shoot was exhausting, seeing the finished edits washed all the fatigue away instantly. So that's all my behind-the-scenes thoughts for this Race Queen Kirara—see you at the next convention!
