Shooting this Traditional Chinese style cosplay in sheer chiffon for Changli Cosplay from Wuthering Waves involved tremendous dedication to hair, makeup, and styling. The pink-and-white gradient wig for this Pink hair cosplay is far from a standard natural color; it required progressive thinning and texturing in layers, aligning the direction of the strands with the contours of the face to ensure crisp visual dimensionality. The head ornaments took the form of golden leaf motifs, echoing the large circular rings beside my ears. In terms of makeup, the eye makeup was blended using reddish-brown earthy tones paired with amber contact lenses, accentuating a calm, composed, and slightly aloof gaze. The lip makeup was kept soft without stealing focus, allowing the visual center of gravity to remain on the eyes and overall facial planes.
The garment preserved the delicate chiffon construction of the original character design. The inner layer consists of a white lace camisole dress, enveloped by an ethereal semi-sheer outer robe interwoven with purple and pink gradients, with subtle golden textures embedded in the fabric that shimmer delicately under light. Around the neck, a collar interweaving white leather and golden metal is studded with a central red gemstone, becoming the visual anchor of the upper silhouette. Wide golden cuff ornaments on the wrists and left leg add a touch of cold metallic firmness to the details, forming a tactile contrast against the gossamer softness of the chiffon. Without specific weapon props to hold, appearing barefoot actually enhanced the visual lightness and ethereal grace of the composition.
For this shoot, we opted for an indoor physical set studio. The set was furnished with a carved daybed in dark solid wood, framed against a backdrop of a circular window featuring ink-wash bamboo paintings, surrounded by peony blossoms and ceramic vases. To complement the outfit's colors, the lighting crew selected soft warm lights. The key light was angled down from the front-side, diffused through a softbox to create gorgeous gradient falloff along the edges of the chiffon, while preserving natural skin texture to avoid overexposure. When shooting the third picture, I found that sitting upright with crossed legs maximized the draped cascade of the outer chiffon and the elongated lines of my legs. The golden anklet around my ankle established a subtle visual resonance with the Go board on the floor; the black and white stones infused the entire frame with a tranquil, scholarly grace, anchoring the image so it didn't feel overly weightless.
Throughout the shoot, I shifted through multiple postures. Sitting sideways in Photo 1 brought a hint of playfulness, lounging on my side in Photo 2 showed languid ease, but the upright seated stance in Photo 3 possessed the most dramatic tension. When shooting such complex sheer chiffon attire, body control is the ultimate test. Arms cannot be squeezed too tight to the torso, which would stifle the breathable drape of the fabric; positioning the legs requires micro-adjustments of muscle tension to maintain fluid lines. The Go board was a crucial prop: it anchored the billowing attire into a concrete narrative setting, making it appear as though the character was in the middle of a game or had just concluded a match—a storytelling depth difficult to achieve through wardrobe alone.
The entire shooting process paid immense attention to detail, from faithful character styling to the physical set construction, striving to present rich visual layers in every frame of this Anime-style photography. Changli's styling visually unites classical oriental poise with modern design lightness, heavily challenging the photographer's mastery of light, shadow, and compositional framing. I am very satisfied with the finished photos, especially the tactile quality of light filtering through the translucent chiffon onto the dark wooden daybed, essentially realizing what we envisioned in pre-production. Studying Changli's lore beforehand, her temperament felt quite elusive—possessing both the effortless composure of a superior and an indefinable sense of distance. Thus, in expression management, I focused on focused gazes and a level curve of the lips, minimizing exaggerated expressions and relying more on body language to convey her aura. The floral arrangements on set were also curated carefully: the vibrant peonies contrasted with the understated elegance of the sheer chiffon, adding color richness to the frame. The shoot progressed smoothly, experimenting with diverse lighting combinations from various angles. Ultimately, while honoring the character's original essence, this photo set also integrated my own personal interpretation of this Wuthering Waves character.
