This set of cosplay photoshoot teasers of Herta from Honkai: Star Rail can finally be posted. From preparation to shooting and the initial retouching and color grading, a tremendous amount of energy was invested in the entire process. The images seen now are merely a sneak peek of the complete project.
The design and production of the costume was one of the most time-consuming parts this time. The wide, pointed magic hat is the visual core of the entire look. I paid special attention to the curvature of the brim, the positioning of the purple bow, and the alignment of the silver-white spiral patterns. To present the most natural tilt angle in front of the lens, a special hidden support was even made inside. Dealing with the silver-white wig was actually quite tricky; it was necessary to ensure the fluffiness and layering of the hair strands without making the highlights look overly greasy under the studio lighting. During the grooming process, I adjusted the bangs and the drape direction multiple times.
The waistband section of this outfit features a tight-fitting, black-and-white color-blocking structure, and the set of silver hollowed-out line ornaments on the chest demanded extremely high craftsmanship. The wide, detached white sleeves added a flowing feel during movements, but special attention had to be paid to the folding shape of the cuffs during the shoot, otherwise it could easily make the overall look appear too bloated. As for the highly geometric magic staff in hand, it is the pride and joy of the prop team. The main body utilizes a multi-material patchwork, with the surface outlined in high-saturation blue paint and silver edges. The pink-purple area embedded in the middle relies on a special coating to simulate a translucent texture like a magic crystal under specific lighting angles.
We rehearsed the light and shadow scheme for a long time before the shoot, intentionally choosing a cool blue light source as the main light, paired with the dark red velvet curtains in the background to create an atmosphere akin to an ancient library or a mysterious domain. Although cool-toned lighting can beautifully highlight the texture of magic props and the translucency of the silver-white hair, it heavily tests the control over skin tone during post-production color gradingāit must maintain the character's cool elegance without making people feel that the white balance of the face is severely thrown off. To recreate the character's calm demeanor of seeing through everything, the makeup highlighted the upturned eyeliner, paired with silver-white eyebrows and hair-like strokes to enhance the piercing power of the gaze.
When portraying this character, I hoped to convey the elegance and control belonging to a top scholar. The character of Herta is highly skilled at dominating various scenes in the work with a phrase like "Don't recognize me? Little one," and that slightly arrogant yet extremely scientific-investigative attribute was the key focus of interpretation throughout the Anime cosplay process. To find the most suitable dynamic tension, we repeatedly tried over a dozen sets of staff-holding and arm-raising poses on-site; even a tiny bending angle of a fingertip would visually determine whether the frame appeared casual or majestic.
The shooting environment on that day was actually very sultry. The massive magic hat combined with the layers of black and white clothing heavily tested my stamina under the roasting studio lights. To maintain that elegant gesture of casting magic, all staff members helped watch the drape of the clothing corners and the orientation of the hat from outside the lens. Because the structure of the entire costume is relatively complex, every change in stance required reorganizing the wrinkles at the shoulders and cuffs. Although the process was exhausting, seeing the moment of magical feel and texture captured in the monitor made all the hard work completely worth it.
The current teaser images mainly focus on displaying the overall styling and props, whereas the subsequent complete Wizard cosplay photoshoot actually plans for more diverse scene compositions and storytelling storyboards. This may include closer macro perspectives to heavily display the local details of those silver patterns and the magic staff. This time, the early shooting and post-production adjustment put a lot of effort into color separation, modifying the light-and-dark relationships of black-and-white materials under blue light multiple times to pursue the optimal visual effect. As a meticulously prepared work, I hope this teaser will allow everyone to catch a first glimpse of the character's unique charm.
