This set of photos was taken during the blooming period of Yuyuantan cherry blossoms in Beijing. To catch the tail end of the cherry blossom season, we woke up extra early to secure a spot. This Yumemizuki Mizuki Japanese style cosplay costume features an immense amount of details, from the purple-pink gradient Japanese style cosplay sleeves to various laces and black bows, requiring quite some time to put on. Because the outfit has many accessories, especially the large blue-black bow at the waist and the black bows at the cuffs, extra care had to be taken during wearing to secure them and prevent shifting during the shoot.
In terms of makeup, to accurately portray the character, I wore purple contact lenses and painted a purple-red-toned eye makeup. Wearing elf ears was also a crucial part, requiring careful attachment to the skin with special effects glue to ensure they wouldn't look fake from any shooting angle. The light blue translucent headwear and purple lace hairband on top of my head also needed to be secured with numerous hairpins. The handheld prop was a purple round fan with spiral patterns on the fan face.
The temperature on the shooting day was moderate, but because Yuyuantan had a massive crowd of visitors, we spent a lot of effort finding camera angles. The photographer was extremely professional; to avoid the crowds, we tried many low-angle and high-angle shots. To showcase the flowy feel of the costume, the photographer had me do some spinning and sleeve-swinging actions. The wide sleeves fluttered gracefully in the wind, coupled with the pink and purple gradient patterns, yielding a fantastic visual effect.
When shooting close-ups of the legs, the purple leg ring on the right thigh served as a wonderful visual focal point. I tried a slightly raised leg pose, which not only showcased the layers of the skirt hem but also made the leg lines look more slender. Since the inner skirt is a white lace ruffled miniskirt, any slight movement could easily lead to a wardrobe malfunction, so I constantly adjusted the skirt's position during the shoot to ensure the actions were both natural and safe.
The lighting under the cherry blossom trees was relatively soft, and the dappled light and shadow filtering through the petals were exceptionally suited for showcasing the texture of this costume. During the shoot, we also tried our best to utilize falling petals as the foreground to enhance the atmospheric feel of the frame. Although the whole process was somewhat tiring, seeing the final results made all the effort feel completely worthwhile. The color scheme of this outfit blended harmoniously against the cherry blossom background, with the purple-pink tones echoing the pink-and-white cherry blossoms.
The fabric of the costume is mostly chiffon and cotton lace, making it relatively lightweight to wear, but it also meant it was prone to wrinkles. Before the shoot, I specifically used a handheld steamer to carefully iron the skirt hem and sleeves flat to ensure the best drape before the lens. The printed pink and purple spiral patterns on the sleeves had high color saturation and stood out vividly in the sunlight. The pink tassels on the black bows also swayed gently in the breeze, adding a lively touch to the overall styling.
In terms of makeup details, aside from eyeshadow and contact lenses, I chose a light pink blush to match the character's original skin tone setting. The lip makeup used a nude pink range to maintain an overall translucent feel. The wig's bangs needed slight styling with hairspray to keep stray hairs from obscuring the eyes. During the shoot, to avoid reflections, the base makeup was kept relatively matte.
The biggest challenge of this spring outdoor cosplay was actually the changing natural light. Because the contrast ratio under the tree shade was quite large, we brought a reflector to fill in light on the face and ensure the presence of catchlights in the eyes. When shooting full-body photos, the photographer backed up quite far, and I needed to adjust my posture based on his instructions. To capture the fleeting moment of the skirt flying in the air, I attempted several jumps and turns, eventually capturing a satisfying frame. Such dynamic candid shots still placed quite a high demand on physical stamina.
Through this shoot, I understood even more clearly the importance of early preparation. Whether it was trimming the wig, checking accessories, or understanding the lighting and crowd conditions of the site in advance, all these were key factors determining the final photo quality. The visitor traffic during Yuyuantan cherry blossoms season is immense; without going early, finding a gap without random passersby entering the frame is nearly impossible. Therefore, for cosplayers wanting to shoot spring outdoor cosplay at similar popular attractions, waking up early and beating the crowds is an absolute must.
In short, this photo set was a tremendously pleasant collaboration. From costume preparation to on-site shooting, every step encapsulated everyone's hard efforts. Being able to leave behind such a set of photos during this brief cherry blossom season feels deeply fulfilling.
