Shooting this Golden Wind photoshoot for Giorno Giovanna was a process packed with challenges, from early wardrobe preparation to on-site execution. The outfit is made of velvet, possessing a subtle surface luster that reveals exceptional texture under favorable lighting. The tailoring of the jacket is very distinctive—a deep V-neck cut edged with gold trim, centered around the chest and lapel circular ornaments featuring green patterns. These had to be firmly anchored in advance to ensure they wouldn't shift during broad, dynamic movements. To faithfully recreate his iconic hairstyle, the wig required pre-styling with the three signature forehead rolls and meticulous blending along the hairline; otherwise, the flash would easily expose flaws. For the makeup, focus was placed on sharpening the brows and deepening the eye contours, paired with skin base work to give the gaze a sterner, colder edge.
The venue was set in an indoor space featuring vintage mirrors and black-and-white checkered tile floors, where red walls and heavy drapery provided rich chromatic contrast. Strong natural indoor lighting produced beautiful backlighting and side lighting, which helped immensely in bringing out the fabric textures and the subject's silhouette. To match the character's demeanor, I explored various angles in posture. Sitting crossed-legged on a high stool or leaning against the bar counter required keeping my back upright so as not to appear slouchy. When shooting from low angles looking up, controlling the body's center of gravity was vital to project that commanding, top-down intimidation and regal aura. In the frames holding props, simulating the unhurried composure of battle meant repeatedly calibrating eye focus and hand positioning.
To accentuate the extending perspective of the black-and-white checkered floor, several shots used tilted Dutch angle compositions, demanding tight coordination between the photographer and me—straying even slightly off-center would break the balance of the frame. Posing atop the high stool actually placed high demands on balance since the contact area between the shoe soles and stool surface was small, requiring core strength to stabilize the body. The frames and mirrors in the venue provided rich background elements but were prone to unwanted reflections, so we conducted multiple tests with lighting and camera positions to avoid cluttered reflections.
Executing this photoshoot took a heavy toll on energy and stamina because maintaining the character's commanding aura had to be sustained throughout. To stay true to character canon, no detail could be neglected—from every fold of the garment and the alignment of accessories to the track of the zipper. The black-and-white checkered floor and red walls created a striking visual impact, against which the black jacket effectively anchored the entire composition. Spanning diverse seated and standing postures, and moving from half-body close-ups to full-body framings, this set faithfully captured the character's cold resolve and unwavering determination. It was an exhausting shoot, but seeing the interplay of light and shadow and the rich textures of the costume in the final images made every bit of preparation and effort deeply worthwhile.
