The overall key tone for this Ruan Mei cosplay Cosplay photoshoot shoot was defined very clearly: hoping to present a tranquil quality belonging to ancient Chinese fantasy colors. Early in preparation, I communicated repeatedly with the photographer about the emotion we wanted to convey, emphasizing an introverted sense of "quiet yet powerful" rather than an outgoing, dramatic performance.

Let's talk about makeup, styling, and costume first. The outfit adopts a color-blocked design of deep blue, white, and pink-purple trim, carrying both a refreshing vibe and a touch of ethereal air. The blue halter neck portion of the collar is decorated with delicate gold-and-red ornaments, paired with a simple pearl necklace to add detailed layering. I chose cool-toned blue-gray contact lenses, paired with clean, slightly sharp eyeliner and reddish lip makeup, attempting to materialize the character's serene coolness in front of the lens. Light blue highlights were applied to the wig, paired with classic wispy bangs, making the overall styling reveal a touch of softness within cold sharpness.

The tailoring of the costume fits the silhouette closely; the off-the-shoulder top paired with short bottoms actually requires careful consideration regarding posture flexibility. Especially the black long leather fingerless gloves—although adding a slight barrier in handling props and posing, visually they form a great contrast. During shooting, good posture needed to be maintained; sitting, lying down, and turning at various angles all needed to present smooth lines in camera.

As for photography equipment, a Sony A7R5 body was used this time, paired with Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 G2 and Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN lenses. The 28-75mm was extremely practical—within the limited space of studio shooting, it outlined full-body silhouette lines while quickly switching compositions in small spaces, guaranteeing shooting efficiency. Meanwhile, the Sigma 85mm with its large aperture was used entirely to capture detailed emotions; whether focused eyes while holding the yueqin or a side profile softly sniffing plum blossoms, this lens's bokeh and sharpness presented extraordinarily delicate facial textures.

Scene setup and lighting were the soul of the entire photoset. The scene used a Chinese-style wooden grille screen and a dark background painted with white plum blossoms and flying birds. Dual-color-temperature lighting with intertwined cool and warm tones was used on site: cool cyan-blue ambient light was cast on the left and main background, while warm yellow standing palace lamps were set on the right and rear. This strong contrast between cool and warm precisely linked cool-toned costumes with warm light halos, enhancing the cinematic and airy feel of the frame. Pairing a white plush seat cushion with a wooden low table injected a touch of warmth and soft texture into the originally cool image, preventing the overall mood from being overly distant.

Props had high involvement, especially the vintage yueqin (moon lute). Its body features delicate golden patterns and intertwined plum blossom branches, echoing the plum blossoms on the background screen. I tried different poses during the shoot, such as lying sideways while gently raising my upper left hand to touch the light at the edge of the set, or sitting holding the lute and looking back. These pose designs aimed to showcase the character's self-contentment and elegance in a tranquil space.

In post-processing, we followed the concept of restoring on-site light and shadow, focusing on preserving the contrast between cool and warm tones while appropriately darkening the outer edges to focus visual attention on the character's body. No overly fancy overlapping filters were added, keeping original photographic transparency and texture as much as possible. For a Cosplay photoshoot, advance preparation and on-site lighting/camera position importance often outweigh post-production, which was the most profound realization summarized from this shoot.

Ancient style photoshoot characters' outfits often contain many intricate elements—like bead strings, metal buckles, fabric textures, etc. here—placing high demands on light reflections and color refraction during shooting. Luckily, the photographer's control over light and shadow was spot-on, which, combined with the equipment's resolving power, allowed final colors and details to reach expected effects. The process of shooting this set of work was itself an enjoyment; with every shutter click freezing a frame, one could feel character emotion overflowing in the picture.

As a long-time enthusiast shooting Cosplay portraits, I always place high value on the immersion brought by scenes and styling. When slipping into this costume, picking up these props, and standing in the built miniature Ancient style photoshoot studio, the boundary between self and character becomes blurred. This experience is truly wonderful, prompting me to maximize character state restoration within my capability every time. Creation itself is an exploration; only by constantly honing the boundary between aesthetics and techniques can one shoot works that satisfy oneself.
