For this photoshoot of Skadi's alter form from Arknights, we specifically chose a coastal reef formation as our location to evoke that liminal boundary between the profound abyss and dry land. Bringing this red-dress version of Skadi to life actually required tremendous effort regarding costume and prop craftsmanship. The iconic blue geometric headdress was fitted with custom internal reinforcement to withstand the fierce sea breeze, while the matte finishing along its edges prevented harsh glare, yielding a much more authentic texture on camera. The spear prop was also re-weathered to imbue it with a gritty, heavy metallic feel.
The environment on shoot day was truly challenging, as the reef area undergoes an absolute transformation between day and night. For the low-key, top-down shot in the first image, we waited until darkness fully descended and the roaring waves crashed against the rocks. To achieve the visual drama of reclining across dark, jagged rocks, I lay directly on the cold, uneven crag. To make the crimson gown drape and wind naturally like tentacles or ribbons, the costumer engineered concealed wire supports and hidden snaps underneath, though executing it on-site was exceptionally tough. Lying there, I had to keep my core taut and adjust my leg positioning so the silhouette of the Black stockings stood out in frame. Lighting was crucial here: a high-angle key light raked in from the side, illuminating my face and chest while separating the layered red dress to create a striking contrast against the eerie deep-blue shadows.
The second photo was captured at dusk—the classic photographer's 'golden hour.' With the sea gilded by the setting sun, standing facing away from the lens was the ultimate angle to convey the character's profound isolation. Raising my left hand toward the open ocean harmonized with the directional thrust of the spear, using the 24mm wide-angle perspective distortion to deepen the frame's scale. To stay balanced on the slick, wet rocks, I added non-slip grips inside my white boots, though every movement still demanded utmost care. The moment the sea wind whipped up my white hair, the shutter froze that fleeting, organic motion. In terms of emotional delivery, I avoided overt drama, relying instead on nuanced gazes and controlled physical tension to embody her temperament. The sunset backlighting delicately silhouetted the hair and garment outlines without excessive fill light, preserving the raw, warm twilight atmosphere. Though the shoot was grueling, seeing the tactile interplay of light and shadow made shivering in the cold entirely worthwhile.
