Preparing this behind-the-scenes set for Azu-nyan was actually quite rushed, but the final frames turned out surprisingly faithful to the character. To recreate Nakano Azusa's presence on stage from K-ON!, I specifically chose a venue equipped with red curtains, a live drum kit, and guitars, lending the background an authentic school band vibe.
Let's talk about the outfit first. A slightly loose white short-sleeve button-down was layered under a pale yellow knit vest, tied at the collar with a red bow, and paired with a grey pleated skirt on the lower half. To embody Azu-nyan's hallmark traits, I wore a black straight twintails wig topped with cat ears edged in white fluff. For footwear, I paired black knee-high stockings with brown loafers. The leather of the loafers was quite stiff, leaving my soles aching after a while, yet I pushed through to preserve the authentic uniform aesthetic throughout the entire shoot.
During the session, I sat along the edge of the elevated wooden stage. Perching there initially felt uncertain, as sitting suspended makes balancing your center of gravity tricky. The photographer suggested trying a side-seated pose first, with hands clasped over my chest. Testing it out, while it matched Azusa's typically bashful temperament, the overall framing felt slightly contracted and looked overly restrained. We switched to a second pose: turning my torso slightly forward, resting my hands naturally over my lap, and letting my legs dangle freely. This posture not only made my presence feel more relaxed and expansive, but also cleanly showcased the leg lines and the texture of the knee-high stockings, ultimately becoming the cover shot.
As a cosplayer who loves dissecting character nuances, I believe capturing Azu-nyan requires more than just costume accuracy. Though easily flustered in everyday moments, her gaze turns remarkably resolute and focused whenever she holds drumsticks or picks up a guitar. To convey this gap before the lens, I deliberately modulated my expressions to project a calm demeanor with expressive eyes. The cat ears overhead were my favorite touch—subtly tilting their angle injected a playful flair that softened the formality of the school uniform.
Throughout shooting, the gaffer continuously adjusted top and side lights. Because the stage curtains were deep crimson and the wooden floor leaned warm, overly bright lighting would have washed out the mood. We experimented with several lighting setups, finally settling on soft rim-backlighting that illuminated individual hair strands while lending the pastel yellow vest a gentle, velvety texture. I stayed in constant communication with the photographer, checking the monitor to ensure limbs didn't clip out of frame and hand placements felt organic.

Resting on the stage afterward, my legs felt sore from dangling for so long, but seeing how harmoniously the black twintails and cat ears complemented each other made every calibration worth it. This shoot was an earnest creative record, blending character nuance with personal interpretation to bring these frames to life.
