[Final Fantasy XIV cosplay] Houndstooth Pattern and Black Animal Ears: Scholar's Daily Photoshoot Notes

This time, I prepared a Scholar Catgirl cosplay from Final Fantasy XIV. While I've always loved the lore of this job, gathering the complete costume, makeup, and props took considerable thought. The outfit features a black-and-white Houndstooth skirt and bodice fabric edged with pearl trim along the plunging V-neckline, preserving the character's intellectual poise while introducing a touch of subtle allure. The white lace lining at the collar and the matching oversized houndstooth bow serve as quintessential finishing touches, which, paired with the reddish-purple half-rim glasses, instantly locked in the character's presence. For the hairstyle, I went with side double hair buns and straight bangs, topped with fluffy black plush animal ears that immediately elevated the look in this Animal ears outfit. The prop was a complex mechanical black-iron weapon with satisfying heft—holding poses was somewhat tiring, but it captured that serious, slightly mysterious aura to perfection.

The shoot primarily aimed to highlight the character's focused, composed, yet subtly playful personality, so the three photos were curated as a frontal close-up, a weapon-wielding stance, and a half-body interactive selfie. The first frontal close-up is my favorite, where the gaze and glasses catch the viewer's attention immediately. The second shot holding the prop creates a striking contrast between the red nail polish and the cold metallic hardware. The third selfie angle is relaxed, showcasing the chest pearl buttons and layered white hemline. For lighting, we avoided complex setups; a clean white wall paired with naturally cool tones made the houndstooth weave and plush fur textures much crisper.

When styling a look with animal ears and intricate neckties, visual clutter is the biggest pitfall. I readjusted the bow's position and the hair bun curves three times before shooting. Although the weapon prop was heavy, it provided an unexpected anchor to lean into, making my shoulder lines look even more upright. I believe the true charm of Final Fantasy XIV cosplay lies in immersing oneself into that job's everyday life rather than merely posing mechanically. I experimented with more restrained facial expressions this time, and I hope everyone can feel that steady, grounded composure unique to a Scholar.
