Finally completed this set of A2. For this shoot, we traveled far to scout an outdoor location covered in jagged rubble; NieR:Automata naturally carries a potent Wasteland style ambiance, where a sense of fractured desolation can be pushed to the max without relying heavily on post-production CGI. The greatsword prop possessed an exceptional finish, though its weight was truly formidable. To hold or balance it with one hand while lying down before the lens, I had practiced arm strength well in advance; during the shoot, maintaining core engagement while keeping facial expressions composed was paramount. A2's cool, sharp, yet subtly melancholic temperament is notoriously elusive to capture.
For attire, the iconic pairing of a black form-fitting bodysuit with long gloves defined the silhouette. The leather-like sheen generated noticeable glare under harsh sunlight, introducing tactical challenges during shooting. The cutout accents across the thighs demanded meticulous camera angle calibration; to showcase Long legs and the garment's tactile finish, I adjusted my reclining posture countless times—balancing elongated body extension while preventing awkward folds or wardrobe slips. The jagged gravel underneath was excruciatingly sharp, and under direct sunlight, the scorching stone surface made lying down intensely hot and painful. Resting against the ground for any duration caused numbness, but chasing that razor-sharp, geometric slice of light and shadow across the suit, I completely pushed through the discomfort.
The makeup deepened orbital contours and shadows; because A2 bears the weathered scars of relentless combat, the face could not appear excessively pristine. White hair reflected harsh glare under the sun, so the photographer explored numerous backlit and front-lit angles, leveraging shadow contrast to sculpt three-dimensional depth. Many frames feature closed eyes or downward gazes, meant not as fatigue, but as quiet alertness during a fleeting lull between battles. I also explored varied bodily gestures—such as shielding the chest or resting a hand across my legs—to convey vulnerability intertwined with guarded vigilance. Propping myself up across uneven rubble required conscious control of muscle definition: exerting too much force looked stiff, while relaxing too much failed to convey battle-hardened resilience.
Seeing the final frames made every hardship worthwhile; each photo strives to faithfully revive that android fighting amidst the ruins. To everyone who loves NieR:Automata, I hope you can feel the unwavering resolve and profound solitude woven into this series.
