[Altria cosplay] The King of Knights in Fate/Grand Order: Reflections on Shooting with the Holy Sword

This photo set was completed in a standard studio. To accurately recreate the character's blue long dress and silver faulds armor, I prepared this custom-made costume. The armor pieces were crafted from specialized materials—giving them an authentic metallic texture, but also considerable weight, which meant I had to constantly mind my center of gravity during posing. Before shooting, we made detailed adjustments to the wig, especially the iconic ahoge sticking up on the crown, which took quite some styling spray and time to shape. The longsword was very heavy; holding it up for extended periods caused my arms to ache, requiring short breaks between takes.

The first photo focuses on stillness: leaning on the sword with both hands, paired with a slightly contemplative gaze to convey her quiet, serene side. The second photo features a backward glance; the photographer used a low-angle shot combined with cool-toned backlight to accentuate the reflective metallic sheen of the armor, making it an ideal choice for the cover. The third photo captures a combat action pose, where swinging the sword required repeatedly adjusting waist torque to maintain posture and balance without toppling.

The shoot lasted four hours. Wearing this full gear naturally makes one stand tall with a straight back, as the costume structure itself offers strong support. In terms of posing direction, the key was capturing a composed yet decisive presence. This temperament echoes the quote, 'Even if I return to the form I had as the King, our oath remains unchanged.' Every sword swing and concentrated gaze was not just mimicking poses, but also feeling the heavy burden of responsibility the character carries. Facial expressions needed to remain restrained, as the character rarely wears her emotions openly. The studio lighting was calibrated meticulously, bringing out a natural satin sheen on the blue fabric that contrasted sharply with the silvery-white metal.

This cosplay project was full of challenges from preparation to execution. Minor mishaps occurred during the session, such as loose armor straps and detachable sword parts coming undone, yet the final results stand as a true tribute to this character. The play of light and shadow captured not only the costume's fine details, but also the subtle stirrings within the character's heart. While packing up afterwards and noticing the minor scuffs on the props, I realized they were more than just wear and tear—they were tangible mementos of this memorable shoot.
