[Ellen Joe cosplay] Everyday vibe of Zenless Zone Zero, a lazy gaze strolling in the staircase

For this daily commute look of Zenless Zone Zero's Ellen Joe, photographer Lin Zai and I decided to shoot something different. Instead of choosing flashy studio lighting and complex battle scenes, we went with a minimalist white shirt paired with a black choker, detaching the character from the combat state of New Eridu and placing her into our familiar everyday environment.

As the base, the white shirt has a slightly crisp silhouette, and combined with the black pleated skirt, it looks visually very clean and sharp in Anime-style fashion. In terms of details, the narrow black choker is the key highlight that elevates the entire look; paired with the short black hair with red tips, the gradient red at the ends creates a distinct color transition against the black collar. When styling the wig, great attention was also paid to the proportion between the black base and the red tips, ensuring Ellen Joe's iconic visual color motif while keeping it from looking cluttered. Wearing this outfit, my whole aura felt settled, exuding a very relaxed everyday vibe.

The shoot took place on a simple outdoor staircase. The dense dark metal railings around served as a great frame, adding visual depth without overshadowing the subject. Lin Zai is very adept at capturing natural light; the diffused light falling on my face made the skin texture look translucent and luminous, while giving the entire image a refreshing cool-toned palette that perfectly suits Ellen Joe's aloof and slightly weary character traits. Choosing the vertical railings as a backdrop, on one hand, uses the vertical lines to elongate the vertical proportions of the figure to appear slender, and on the other hand, the spacing of the railings is just right for masking distractions and focusing attention, naturally drawing the viewer's gaze to the upper body and the styling coordination.

In makeup, to preserve character recognizability, the eye makeup used deeper reddish tones to outline contours, slightly deepening the lower eyelids to make the gaze look deeper and carry an unrestrained, careless nonchalance. The red lips serve as an accent, not overly flashy but enough to boost the spirit. The entire makeup strives to be clean and crisp without over-embellishment, because the outfit itself already carries enough narrative.

During shooting, it was more about finding a sense of relaxation. Leaning against the railings with crossed arms, with my gaze looking slightly downward or straight into the camera without making exaggerated poses, naturally expressed that lazy yet slightly arrogant temperament. Lin Zai gave me a lot of room for free expression throughout the shoot; we tried different angles and gaze directions, and these final shots best capture the sense of "gaze" we originally wanted to convey—not a fierce glare, but a languid gaze looking carelessly into the distance or into the camera.

Working with photographer Lin Zai was very smooth; he consistently encouraged me to stay in the zone and recreate the most authentic side of the character in the simplest way. Looking at the final photos from this Cosplay photography, they truly met my expectations. Without deliberate pretension, finding the character's appearance in ordinary daily life often has a more touching power. Being able to present the character's everyday feel in my own way made the whole process deeply fulfilling. This is probably the charm of shooting Casual cosplay—no need to worry about complicated backgrounds; the key is capturing the core of the character and outfit details, bringing 2D characters into 3D life scenes so they appear flesh-and-blood.
