For this set of photos of Arlecchino from Genshin Impact, from the exact moment we settled on the red and blue lighting and the chain scenery, I was highly looking forward to the texture of the final photos.
The atmosphere of this shoot was largely credited to the criss-crossing metal chains in the scene and the red petals scattered at my feet. The photographer adopted a classic red and blue side-lighting setup, forming an incredibly intense collision of warm and cool tones against the dark backdrop, which happened to beautifully accentuate a cold, aloof temperament. To complement this lighting effect, I spent considerable thought on managing the wig; the silvery-white strands with black highlights presented gorgeous rim lighting under the refraction of the red and blue lights, but this also meant the hairstyle couldn't be too fluffy, otherwise it would leave redundant shadows on the face. Therefore, when styling, we intentionally used setting products to press down the sideburns, allowing the bangs to display a sharp yet natural curve.
The major focus of the makeup lay in those red eyes and dark lip makeup. To enhance the piercing power of the gaze, the eyeliner was elongated slightly and the silhouette of the lower eyelid was deliberately deepened. Combined with deep purplish-red lipstick, looking straight into the lens delivered a commanding sense of pressure. This set of photos demanded restrained expressions without too much facial muscle movement, relying entirely on the eyelids and gaze shifts to convey emotional changes, which heavily tested my expression management.
In terms of costume styling, the pattern of this outfit is highly unique. The white coat features silver geometric texture embossing with a very rigid quality, making the shoulder silhouette look exceptionally dimensional. The inner-worn gray-blue vest and the red and black leaf-shaped accessories at the collar achieved a balance of white, gray, black, and red in coloring. However, the part requiring the most attention was the cuffs; the wide white bell cuffs paired with the black and red strapped gloves possessed a strong sense of styling, but once the posture was wrong, it could easily look bulky, so I paid special attention to the direction of force in my arms during the shoot. Additionally, the lower body's black trousers were paired with a red-lined hem; once stepping into the black high heels adorned with metal decorations, the visual center of gravity was elongated, making the overall silhouette look upright and crisp.
The half-body close-up in Photo 1, where a single finger lightly touches the lower lip, looks relaxed in expression, but executing this movement just right was actually not easy. The bending curve of the finger and the orientation of the wrist had to be repeatedly adjusted to look effortless rather than forced. Photo 2 features a sitting posture; although I was stepping on a high stool, to prevent the trouser legs and the red lining from looking visually cluttered, I repeatedly folded the pant hems multiple times, which heavily tested my patience. Photo 3 holding that greatsword is my favorite among the sequence; this weapon itself was extremely heavy, and holding the hilt with a single hand while letting the blade create an intense perspective distortion in front of the lens required another hand to quietly hold it steady outside the frame, relying entirely on core strength for support. My arm was truly sore and numb for quite a while after completing this sequence.
Cosplaying is not as simple as just putting on a character's clothes; everything from the direction of fabric wrinkles to the landing spots of light and shadow, and the sense of force in movements will affect the final presentation. The chains are icy cold, yet the petals carry a trace of poignant warmth—this sense of contradiction fits the core of the character perfectly. I am delighted to have completed this set of photos with a highly synchronized photographer. The final output perfectly restored the coldness and tension the character ought to have, while presenting the fine details of this costume beautifully.
