[Yaoyao Cosplay] The Warm Guardian of Genshin Impact, Resonating with Nature by the Water in Chongzuo

This outdoor work, shot by the water in Chongzuo, features a color palette and atmosphere that perfectly align with the inherent healing and vital vibe of the character Yaoyao. Choosing natural riverbank environments with open views over an indoor studio, we utilized the shimmering water surface and sheltering hanging greenery to present the character’s naturally relaxed state during travel.

Regarding the styling, the wig was specially crafted with her iconic twin circular hair bun coils. The golden hair looks fluffy and soft under outdoor sunlight, and the bangs and sideburn curves are just right, well-fitting her face shape. In terms of attire, the yellow-green vest of the upper body is the core of this outfit, featuring bright and refreshing colors. The inner white lantern-sleeve shirt adds layering, and the red rope details tightening the cuffs and the small pockets on the body are preserved. The lower body wears brown-trimmed shorts. While the overall design is lively and casual, the hem brings out a light and airy movement when blown by the outdoor wind.

In terms of props, a rattan woven basket was prepared, not filled with overly complex decorations. Its role here is mainly to enhance the character’s casual, travel-like atmosphere. Whether held in hand, placed at foot, or hung on the arm, it well supports the visual sense of a young girl out on a spring outing. The foot pairing consists of white long boots, with several warm orange-red patterns as accents, cooperating with the light-colored leggings to harmonize the overall color echo. Standing on the grassland by the waterfront, the texture of this gear in natural light is particularly prominent.

Controlling the light during filming was crucial. We utilized afternoon backlighting and side-backlighting effects, letting sunlight filter through the gaps in the willow leaves to form a gentle rim light around the figure. Especially when filming the postures of lying back and side-sitting in the fifth and sixth shots, the background light through the tree canopy formed beautiful scattered light halos, adding a warm edge to the hair, making the frame hazy and beautiful. The riverbank’s ancient tree roots are thick, serving as a natural background for me to lean against and sit down, weaving together with the textures of the old roots to give the overall composition a breathable sense close to nature.

While portraying this character, I also deliberately tried to capture the gentle yet powerful side of her personality. Though appearing like a little girl, her lines reveal a firm determination to guard the Traveler. Therefore, in action design, there are both dynamic candid captures of happily greeting with open arms and static close-ups of quietly dazing under the tree roots. Switching between different shot scales makes the character’s image more three-dimensional and abundant. Fiddling with the rattan basket in hand or gazing at the water surface, every expression strives to align with the character’s original portrayal of being simple and harmless yet reliable.

This Chongzuo photoshoot went very smoothly from location selection to the final products. Completely relying on outdoor natural light and shadow, although there were challenges of fast-changing light needing instant captures, it was also these uncontrollable natural elements that endowed this set of photos with unique vitality. Compared to photography completely relying on artificial lighting, this natural-style filming made me feel a higher match with the character Yaoyao. The overall color palette was not deliberately processed excessively, but rather to recreate the real texture I saw, hoping the final presentation can bring a relaxing and leisurely visual experience, preserving the character’s warm elements in the frame to the maximum extent.
