Shooting this Barbara swimwear cosplay in Sanya was extra joyful, mainly because experiencing such bright and warm sunshine in winter is truly rare. Choosing this outfit for the beach was because of how well the blue-and-white color scheme matches the sandy beach and water environment, making it refreshing and clean. To recreate that super energetic feel of the character, I trimmed the wig for a long time; the light golden twin-tails not only need to maintain fluffiness, but the hair ends also need layering so they won't look rigid when blown by the sea breeze. For the blue flower and white bow hair accessories on top of the head, I specially chose materials with a lustrous feel, capable of reflecting delicate textures under the sunshine.
Clothing details are actually quite a test of maintenance skills. The outer white mesh puff sleeves need careful adjustment during shooting to ensure the lace trims are always in their best condition and don't curl up due to excessive movement. The huge beige bow on the chest has supporting material added inside to ensure it remains crisp and well-shaped without collapsing onto the swimwear. The yellow swim ring prop around the waist is definitely the finishing touch; with it, the sense of interaction during photo-taking instantly shoots up. The dark blue one-piece swimsuit serves as the inner layer, with its edges spliced with delicate lace and ruffles, preserving sailor uniform elements while ensuring practicality for water-side shooting. The blue leg ring on the thigh and the straps on the ankle add visual layering to the overall styling and better fit the character's design.
To fit the theme of vacation water play, we captured many splashing-water moments that day. The actions look casual, but they actually require strong control. For example, when extending both hands forward or gently kicking the water surface, the angle of force application must be mastered well so that the splashes can form a perfect parabola. Because the outdoor lighting was very strong, I had to struggle to keep my eyes open to find the lens while maintaining a sweet smile, which was quite a test for facial muscle control. With a tropical thatched pavilion and lush greenery as the background, dappled light and shadows hit the wooden boardwalk; with appropriate water flow and lighting/shadow special effects added in post-processing, it instantly gained a dreamy feeling of breaking through the dimensional wall.
Outdoor shooting combined with playing in the water is indeed a major challenge for makeup setting and wigs. Sweat quickly ruins the base makeup, requiring a small fan to cool down, absorb oil, and touch up makeup at any time; if water droplets splashing onto the wig are not wiped dry in time, the hair strands sticking together will lose their lightness. Fortunately, the final effect presented is very clear and natural, and it also successfully portrayed Barbara's energetic and water-loving traits.
