Releasing this Barbara outdoor set from the Hangzhou Anime Convention, the photo results under natural light are indeed more surprising than a pure studio shoot. We specially caught the afternoon when the sunlight was at its best, allowing the blue-and-white costume and the golden curly hair to reflect a highly translucent texture under the sun.
In terms of clothing, a style with strong sailor suit outfit elements was selected this time. The line treatments at the blue neckline and cuff edges are quite clean, and the large yellow-and-white striped bowknot on the chest acts as an excellent visual anchor, adding a splash of bright color to the overall white top. The white ruffled patchwork on the lower body combined with the blue inner shorts elongates the leg proportions, while the detached white long sleeves balance both a layered design and actual freedom of movement.
A yellow duck pendant was specially added to the accessories, clipped directly at the shoulder strap, which is both playful and forms a vivid contrast between warm and cool colors. The blue-and-white flower headwear on top of the head echoes the white daisy elements on the platform shoes from top to bottom, which not only unifies the details but also makes the character's water-element traits more distinct. These platform chunky-heeled shoes provided excellent support when standing on the stone steps of the outdoor location, preventing me from getting too tired after standing for a long time.
Regarding the wig, this lighter golden-yellow curly hair was selected without overly rigid styling, retaining a natural curl radius. Coupled with a light air bangs style, it looks incredibly lively when a gentle breeze blows by. For the makeup, to coordinate with the bright environment, the focus was placed on the delineation of eyeliner and eyelashes, weakening the block-like feel of the eyeshadow. The lip color was chosen in a natural rose tone, hoping to present a clean, clear, and hydrated texture.
Special thanks to photographer Xiong Guang for his control of light during this shoot. He made full use of the high-position outdoor light and the highlight reflections from the background lake surface. The first set of sitting poses on the stone steps extended the character's body lines through a slightly high camera angle looking down, while the subsequent standing actions combined with the shallow depth-of-field background blur brought the visual focus onto the character very prominently.
Shooting on-site outdoors at the Hangzhou Anime Convention like this, the biggest advantage is that the background inherently features fresh natural vegetation and open lake water, yielding a very clear frame without artificial set design. The sunlight filters through the leaves, casting mottled shadows on the steps and increasing the layers of the frame. When doing such a energetic character, the authenticity of the environment and the relaxation of candid captures are extremely important; as long as the wind happens to lift the skirt hem and hair strands, the captured photos will carry a strong sense of vitality.
Many passing audience members recognized the outfit that day, which indeed echoed the meme "Albert, please stop rushing!" But everyone kept their distance reasonably to take photos, and the interaction experience was great. During intervals, I also needed to pay attention to the costume's shape at any time, especially since the sleeve covers slip down easily, so we had to re-adjust the angles of the cuffs every time before shooting to ensure the blue borders showed neatly in the frame. Although the little duck pendant is cute, hanging it constantly still pulls on the shoulder a bit; however, for the sake of the styling effect, these trade-offs in details are entirely worth it. For post-processing, we mainly unified the overall tone, slightly lowered the shadows, and calibrated the overall colors into a blue-and-white theme while retaining the skin's natural texture, keeping the frame revolving around the fresh and healing atmosphere of the water element. Although this kind of outdoor cosplay shoot is tiring, compared to studio shoots, it genuinely carries more life and vitality.
