The haze machines whirred incessantly throughout the bamboo grove as artificial snow drifted steadily over my wig and outfit; when the chilly mountain breeze swept through, the lightweight sheer fabric clung softly against the skin. To embody Justina Gu's cool, razor-sharp aura, I spent extensive time before the mirror rehearsing my gaze and blade-wielding stances prior to shooting.
The costume boasts an abundance of structural details: a white mini dress layered with semi-sheer tulle sleeves, complemented by silver metallic waist ornaments and crisscrossing blue ties that create rich visual depth once worn. To complete the overarching visual harmony, I wore white pantyhose. Under the studio strobes, the White stockings formed a sharp contrast with the withered forest floor leaves and drifting snowflakes in the air. The longsword in hand glowed with an ethereal blue radiance; the floating luminous lotus effect seen in the third photo was dialed in through repeated iterations with the post-production artist. To ensure we captured optimal lighting angles in-camera on set, I held my arms aloft in the dense haze for long stretches.
The greatest hurdle during shooting was managing the flow of the skirt hem and the long ponytail. The bamboo forest terrain was uneven, making walking in White stockings prone to slipping, while low-angle framing required me to lean deeply into dramatic angles while preserving balance. For the sword-bearing posture in the second image—aiming to flatter the waist and leg contours while locking in a sharp perspective along the blade's edge—it took more than a dozen attempts to locate the golden angle. The mountain wind whipped the long ponytail into disarray, yet that wild movement perfectly accentuated the ethereal grace of a warrior mid-combat.
For movement design, I wanted to avoid static, formulaic poses. Drawing inspiration from the line 'A single blade frosts fourteen provinces,' we incorporated slashing arcs and one-handed levitation poses during rehearsals. Because White stockings easily snag on stray twigs in the tangled bamboo underbrush, every shift in footing was calculated with utmost caution. Yet whenever the shutter opened, unwavering aloofness and intense focus had to be maintained.
By the end of the shoot, the outfit was dusted with dry leaves and soil, the wig required thorough recombing, and my physical energy was thoroughly drained. But the moment raw camera previews revealed the blue special effects aligning seamlessly with the white-and-blue attire, all the exhaustion evaporated. This brand of fantasy-infused Chinese-style cosplay looks relentlessly striking no matter how many times you see it, and I am immensely grateful to the photographer and support crew who weathered the mud with me all afternoon.
