Sharing convention photos of Rem's Sailor suit look from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-.
When preparing this look, the primary consideration was how to capture the character's cool yet adorable temperament. The wig was chosen in a gradient blue style, hand-trimmed into layers to frame the face with bangs and sideburns. For makeup, the focus was placed on defining the gaze: light blue colored contacts were used, with eyeliner slightly extended outward to make the eyes look rounder, followed by a subtle dab of highlighter in the center of the eyelids to look vibrant even under the complex lighting of an Anime convention.
This Sailor suit has a strong sense of design—the top fabric is lightweight and sheer with an excellent drape, and the proportion of blue and white stripes is just right. The yellow necktie and matching yellow scrunchie on the wrist serve as visual highlights, which, paired with the blue sailor cap and pink hair ornament, instantly elevated the overall color saturation. Speaking of the White stockings everyone pays close attention to: choosing the right stocking material for this kind of character is crucial. It's best to choose opaque fabric with moderate thickness, high elasticity, and a non-bulky fit, which flatters leg lines beautifully when paired with high heels.
The shooting location was an Anime convention hall with an excellently reflective, mirror-like floor, which the photographer utilized to capture great reflections. Combined with the relatively large inflatable swim ring prop, the shoot actually required substantial physical effort. In Photo 1, lying on the smooth floor with both hands resting on cheeks was intended to highlight an innocent, cute facial expression; this pose puts demands on lower-back support, taking several takes to find the most relaxed feel. In Photo 2, sitting on a chair and slightly lifting the skirt utilized crossed legs to visually elongate proportions and better showcase the strengths of the white thigh-high stockings—keeping shoulders squared and maintaining an upright upper body is essential here. In Photo 3, kneeling on one knee while holding the swim ring was meant to show another, more lively side of the character.
To make the leg lines look more natural, I also dedicated effort during post-processing—mainly micro-adjusting leg proportions and removing harsh shadows without exaggerated stretching to maintain realism. After all, retouching is not about altering reality, but rather about better accentuating the character's inherent strengths and the texture of the garments. The pleated skirt of the Sailor suit sways with the wind while walking, but when standing still, one needs to fluff it manually to create volume.
Although running around at an Anime convention was exhausting, the venue was noisy, and the cropped design of the outfit required constant vigilance against wardrobe malfunctions, seeing these photos made me genuinely happy. Everything prepared with dedication was presented so nicely, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the character. This was a wonderful photography experience that gave me deeper insights into Sailor suit stylings. Given the chance next time, I'd love to try a darker gothic-style outfit to further hone my expression management.
