I've finally finished shooting the official cosplay photo set of Shirasu Azusa in her swimsuit form—Mizuki cosplay—from Blue Archive! Her swimsuit design is truly the pinnacle of the entire Blue Archive swimwear lineup. From the very first glance at the official character art, I was completely enchanted—that perfect harmony of sheer cuteness and delicate opulence struck my heart instantly. To recreate the original artwork as flawlessly as possible, we poured immense effort into the prep stage. The costume boasts rich intricacies: the large pink bow at the chest, the navy blue color-blocked accents, and the pink-and-white ruffled skirt layering all required thorough verification of fabrics and tailoring to ensure the best three-dimensional depth on camera. Furthermore, the white feathered wings on the back and the halo atop the head were indispensable elements. To keep the wings from appearing artificial under studio lights, we spent considerable time mounting and adjusting their angle, making sure they unfurled naturally across my back.
For makeup, to channel that translucent, ethereal temperament unique to Mizuki, I wore blue colored contacts to match the character's eye color. The wig's bangs were carefully trimmed to naturally contour my face, complemented by the red bow on the left and the vibrant floral hairpins and beaded ornaments on the right, bringing the head styling to completion. Because this is a swimsuit setting, I went completely barefoot without shoes or socks. When posing, maintaining the character's persona while ensuring visual expressiveness on camera—such as the extension of the legs and the clasping of the hands—required continuous fine-tuning.
We opted for a white cyc studio, primarily for easier backdrop handling in post-production and flexible light sculpting. The set was decorated with green palm leaves, a blue-and-white lifebuoy, a colorful beach ball, and dark wooden barrels against purple backdrop paper, striving to evoke a breezy summer beach or poolside vacation vibe. The reflective floor in the studio added extra depth to the composition, capturing crisp reflections of the props and model to make everything look vibrant and dynamic. Our photographer, Lingchen, was exceptionally skilled with lighting, employing a clean, luminous setup that highlighted the garment's colors and textures while rendering the skin porcelain and radiant—especially bringing out the ribbed texture of the white striped arm sleeves.
Throughout the shoot, we explored various seated poses and motions, such as perching on a white cube prop with legs hanging freely or crossed, and hands gently clasped in front. Every single frame aimed to capture Azusa's calm, quietly earnest, yet slightly innocent air. Every cosplay journey—from studying the character illustration and preparing costumes and props to on-set hair, makeup, and shooting—is fraught with challenges, but the moment you see the finished photos, all that hard work becomes entirely worthwhile. This summer studio shoot was an incredible experience, fulfilling my wish to bring a beloved character to life while preserving wonderful memories before the lens.
