Shooting Miyako (Swimsuit) in the rain was truly a unique experience. Looking at the weather forecast before heading out boded ill, but photographer @GaoXingHenli and I still bit the bullet and rushed toward the coast. When we stepped onto the sand, we were greeted by howling sea winds and continuous drizzling rain. To protect the camera and lenses, the photographer wrapped his equipment tightly in raincovers, leaving most of his own body exposed to the chilly sea air. While the sea under such weather lacked the radiant brightness of blazing sun, it gained a cool, distinct mistiness. I've always felt that Beach photography on rainy days carries an inherent moodiness—diffused soft light devoid of harsh, unflattering shadows.
This look demands meticulous attention to detail. The light blue twin-tail wig required careful grooming beforehand to remain ultra-silky, as the natural drape of the hair strands directly influences the visual lightness. The support structure for the floating halo hair ornament put the wig's foundation to the test; we repeatedly adjusted its angle before shooting to ensure it held up against the coastal gusts. The white off-the-shoulder ruffled top was wonderfully breezy, beautifully framing the shoulder neckline; though easily tossed by sea breezes, the natural flutter added lively motion to the imagery. Dark blue shorts offered a clean, sporty silhouette that, framed against the sandy shore and translucent swim ring, matched the summer waterside vibe perfectly. The small pink water gun served as a delightful visual highlight, introducing a playful pop of color to the cool palette.
The greatest challenge was sitting on the translucent swim ring while waves crashed against me. With tides surging continuously underfoot and uneven sand below, maintaining balance on the float while projecting a relaxed, leisurely posture was far trickier than it appeared. Given the chilly water temperature, I had to towel off excess water droplets after every shot.
To capture the fleeting moments of waves splashing against the swim ring and legs, we had to coordinate closely with the tidal rhythm. The white foam spraying in the photos was exceedingly precious because it vanished in a split second. Balancing dynamically on the float meant aiming for refined composition while resisting the impact of the waves, demanding impeccable shutter timing. Fortunately, the curated final shots turned out beautifully—the misty moisture layered with the transparent swim ring created a subtly sci-fi, cool aesthetic.
Unlike studio shoots where the environment can be fully controlled, an outdoor Beach photography session relies heavily on trust and chemistry between photographer and model. @GaoXingHenli demonstrated remarkable professionalism throughout, capturing countless spontaneous, candid moments without a single complaint about the adverse weather. Despite being cold and exhausted, seeing the raw previews made every bit of hardship worthwhile.
This seaside shoot was also a valuable learning curve for me—figuring out how to adapt my expression and blend props into the ambiance under shifting conditions is always worth exploring. The rainy sea provided a distinct canvas for this project, freezing this moment in time. The journey itself was deeply engaging; finding a serene pocket of time amidst wind and rain and capturing it on camera embodies the greatest joy of photography and Casual cosplay.
