At the Mengka Comic Con venue back then, the lighting conditions were actually quite complex with many industrial overhead lights, a spacious open floor, and occasional passersby. However, the photographer captured angles exceptionally well. Combined with my luminous halo prop and on-site fill lights, the resulting shots surprisingly achieved that dreamy, translucent quality I aimed for. Every frame captured the moments of putting on this outfit, wig, and props, striving to faithfully bring the character to life.
Cosplaying Koharu this time, my first impression was that the layers of the costume were far more intricate than expected. The core of the garment features a white halter neckline with ribbons and a bow on the chest serving as visual accents. The draped chiffon sleeves on both shoulders required careful adjustment; although the lightweight fabric has a structured shape, walking around the comic con meant frequently rearranging it to maintain its elegance. The dark blue choker around the neck is a central accessory, accented with white petal patterns that brighten the neckline and prevent the all-white theme from looking plain. The most eye-catching prop was certainly the pink halo atop my head—a 3D piece with a hollow concentric circle design secured to the wig using a custom headband. To keep it from falling, I had to be mindful of my head angle when posing, ensuring not to tilt too sharply, which was truly a delicate balancing act.
To capture Koharu's shy yet slightly tsundere demeanor, I emphasized pink-toned blush under the eyes and on the tip of the nose, paired with light-colored contact lenses to portray that nervous yet dignified look when she gets serious. For hair, pink twin tails were styled with cat-ear-shaped hair tufts and black-and-white hair ties on both sides, making the head contour look fuller and more rounded.
The photoshoot was mainly divided into standing and sitting scenes. For standing poses, holding a bouquet in soft blue and white tones served as an extension of hand movements, balancing the white in the composition while making gestures like resting a hand on the waist or gently touching my hair feel more interactive. The other hand tried placing on the waist or softly stroking the hair, allowing the overall standing posture to look more naturally upright and fluid. For the seated set, the visual focus was placed on the elongation of leg lines; paired with white stockings, curling up my legs made the look appear much more docile and calm. We also laid a plush white blanket on the floor, which prevented the skirt hem and stockings from picking up dust while infusing the shot with a soft, cozy feeling.
Throughout the shoot, I had to constantly monitor my makeup, halo prop, and the stability of the cat-ear wig. Since comic cons have dense foot traffic, dodging passersby in the frame was a real test of quick reactions. Although crowds were bustling and the ambient noise was loud, once immersed in the role of Koharu, I focused entirely on the camera. The tailored fit of this outfit, combined with the halter neckline and shoulder exposure, required maintaining good posture without slouching while moving around, preserving the character's spirited poise.
The photographer was very professional, avoiding stiff posed setups and instead pressing the shutter while I adjusted the bouquet or smoothed my hairpieces. Several shots were captured mid-motion, which felt much more dynamic than rigidly held poses. We experimented with various camera angles including low and high angles, and the lens consistently nailed the focus.
Every cosplay endeavor, from makeup and styling to lighting and final photo delivery, demands great teamwork on site. Special thanks to the photographer for turning an ordinary convention hall into a clean, studio-like setting. The final frames are free from background clutter; while the overhead lighting was slightly harsh, soft retouching created a dreamy specular highlight that lent the white fabric a pearlescent sheen and rich texture.
