[Li Zhiyan cosplay] Arknights: Endfield Rainy Night: Cyberpunk Moments Captured via Direct Flash Portrait

I experimented with Direct flash portrait shots on a rainy night street to recreate the look of Li Zhiyan from Arknights: Endfield. The original intention of this shoot was to explore high-contrast textures, allowing the silver-gray metallic fabrics to exhibit a colder, sharper edge under the direct strike of the flash. Paired with a white-to-cyan-blue gradient wig, iconic white beast ear accessories, and that striking red triangle accent, the overall visual focal point was distinctly defined.

It was raining quite heavily that night, and the ground was covered in puddles reflecting the city's neon glow. We chose a bustling intersection with continuously glowing billboards and traffic behind us for this Rainy night street photography session. At first, I was a bit worried that the rain might soak the wig or damage props, but once shooting began, I was completely immersed. The moment I held up the transparent umbrella, rainwater slid down the canopy, forming distinct droplets in mid-air. The flash froze these tiny droplets, which, combined with the cyberpunk urban light bokehs behind, instantly unleashed an intense atmosphere.

The costume features a midriff-baring top paired with a silver mini-skirt; the metallic fabric creates a wonderful reflective gradient under the flash, while the loose black oversized jacket and white bow accents on the arms enrich the outfit's layers, preventing the all-over metallic palette from feeling monotonous. During the shoot, the photographer paired a direct flash with a wide aperture, which not only suppressed messy ambient light in low-light conditions and boosted neon saturation, but also made the subject stand out remarkably in this Anime cosplay showcase. Naturally, this lighting technique places high demands on makeup—especially the highlighters in the eye makeup, which had to be crisp and clean to withstand the scrutiny of direct lighting.

Real-location street shooting truly tests a cosplayer's poise on set. Being on the street surrounded by passersby, feeling self-conscious is almost inevitable, but the moment the flash fired, my focus shifted entirely to aligning my body language with the character setting. Beyond facial expressions, the backward turn, the grip on the umbrella, and the momentary languor when adjusting the collar were all intended to convey a cool, composed, yet effortless demeanor. The cool-toned skin tones in the photos complemented the vibrant city colors beautifully, and the wet asphalt reflected kaleidoscopic lights, keeping the overall palette from falling into mere monochrome shades of black, white, and gray. Through this shoot, I also gained valuable experience for Anime cosplay photoshoots in harsh weather—such as costume waterproofing, prop storage, and capturing natural moments under challenging lighting. It was a deeply rewarding creative shoot, and the final results faithfully realized the intended visual impact of this Li Zhiyan cosplay from Arknights: Endfield.
