This shoot at Wuhan Mengxiang happened to catch the convention schedule right before the Spring Festival. To present the visual setting of New Year Misaki, this outfit went through repeated consideration from material selection to accessories. The white improved qipao integrates 3D lace with a single-sided high slit design. The exquisite red-and-white frogs and piping outline a clear silhouette. The plush shawl not only adds warmth but also gives the shoulder and neck lines more layers. The folding fan is the finishing touch that echoes the qipao; the texture and lightness of the fan ribs are extremely photogenic in front of the lens.
Although the lighting at the convention venue was quite conventional, the regularly distributed circular overhead lights happened to form a background array with a strong sense of rhythm. To match this cool-toned environment, the hair and makeup chose a cool-toned deep blue hair color. The double buns paired with bright red bows allowed the red elements to stand out among the overall white, blue, and black color relationships. The eye makeup specially enhanced the sharpness of the gaze, paired with light-colored contact lenses, trying hard to grasp that ease and composure of Misaki.
During the shooting process, this plush shawl was actually quite a physical task; it was relatively heavy, and if one didn't pay attention to the shoulder strength, it could easily slide off, so constant micro-adjustments to shoulder balance were needed when transitioning between standing and sitting postures. Meanwhile, the combination of white platform high heels and over-knee black stockings made the leg lines appear more slender. The photographer, Yun Ranran, perfectly matched the characteristics of convention photos in terms of composition and capture rhythm. She could both capture the dynamic tension of swinging the fan with one leg touching the ground and freeze that slightly casual aura while sitting on the chair.
Convention photos often only involve a few minutes of rapid creation, but this set truly caught many of the moments I wanted. Being able to recreate a beloved character with this sense of ritual at the New Year node made me very happy. The entire set of photos balances the fusion of prop presentation and character temperament; it doesn't look bloated due to the large area of plush elements, but instead shapes a cool elegance in the cold grey-toned environment. I hope these little experiences of offline shooting can also provide some reference for other cosplayers who like ancient style or qipao settings.
