This time at Firefly ACG Expo, I shot a set of Arona cosplay convention photos, striving to match the character's design closely from costumes and props to posing. Because the art style of Blue Archive leans fresh, bright, and incorporates sci-fi elements, the character's halo and holographic screen effects greatly enhance visual dimension. The color palette for my makeup and styling centered around sky blue and pure white. I chose a silky ice-blue wig, with purple-pink dip-dye accents at the tips adding a playful touch and depth to the cool tones. The contact lenses were specially sourced in a translucent sky blue, paired with slightly upturned eye makeup to bring out that vibrant, energetic aura. The glowing circular halo and white bunny-ear bow headpiece overhead were the soul of this styling, and the lighting effect on-site turned out wonderfully.
For the outfit, the sky-blue sailor-collared top is the highlight, featuring an open neckline with double-layered white lapels tied with a white necktie, balancing uniform aesthetics with comfort. The lower half features a well-proportioned white pleated skirt revealing bare legs, harmonizing with the overall light blue palette to create a very crisp, clean look without feeling bulky.
On the day of the shoot, I had great synergy with photographer DJ-kun. We selected a brightly lit corner inside the Firefly ACG Expo venue, leveraging natural ambient daytime light to simulate that sense of transparency. We prepared several distinct props to enrich visual expression: in the first photo, I held a light blue SCHALE folder, one of the character's signature daily elements; next, I held the stick-figure doodle drawing, aiming to capture her free-spirited lore; the third close-up featured me holding a small badge in both hands, matched with a playful yet focused gaze; finally, in the shot seated on a yellow striped bench, grid and ring holographic light effects were added in front of my fingertips, infusing a sci-fi touch that is central to her identity. Shooting a character with special effects lore and combining good on-site lighting with post-production overlays makes the final result feel much closer to 2D anime illustrations.
Although Arona is an abstract AI entity, bringing her into reality gave me a much more tangible connection to her. For instance, while she looks innocent and bubbly on the outside, she carries a bystander's calm when dealing with specific matters—a contrast that is fascinating to translate into posing. As we shot, many passersby stopped to watch or snap photos with their phones, making the on-site atmosphere very lively.
Sometimes cosplaying such characters might seem like just putting on a costume and wig, but truly performing in front of the camera requires deciphering their emotional state. I made deliberate adjustments to eye contact and gestures this time—such as holding the drawing slightly higher with a subtle smile to convey an easygoing, confident, and slightly smug mood. The angles whether standing or sitting on the bench also required constant communication with the photographer to ensure the leg lines and skirt pleats took their most natural form. Blue Archive has such a distinctive art style, and Arona possesses her unique approachability, making every photo session feel like a fresh adventure.
I am quite satisfied with the lighting and mood of these convention photos. The high-key lighting didn't wash out colors, but rather made the light blue of the outfit look even more translucent. The glass curtain wall in the background blending with outdoor natural light created a dreamy, ethereal sense of overlapping space and time. Instead of complex set builds, utilizing the venue's clean metal and glass architectural elements highlighted the subject, making the photos more enduringly aesthetic. Even with the noisy, bustling convention crowd, focusing under the photographer's lens allowed me to slip instantly into character.
