This time, shooting this Cheshire Cosplay costume, the overall blue and white outfit color scheme and transparent material setting can be said to combine the themes of water and ice/snow just right.
Let's start with the top design of this look. This massive light blue wide-brimmed hat is one of the most recognizable elements in the entire modeling look; the layered ruffles and stiff mesh tulle echo the lively yet slightly gorgeous traits in the character setting beautifully. The short wig's color is a highly lightweight pale blue, forming a color gradient transition with the hat and the accessories on the body. That choker around the neck with a glossy texture and pearl decorations adds a bit of sophistication within the cool color tones.
The most attractive part of the upper body is actually the waist details. The lace-up corset design is highly critical across the entire look, which both contours clear lines and gives the layered sheer tulle a clear focal point. The bubble sleeves on the arms are made of semi-transparent sheer tulle material; paired with this white folding fan held in the palm, it not only increases the layered feel of the styling but also allows more lightweight postures to be displayed through different limb movements during the shoot.
If you look closely at the details of the skirt hem, you will find that the designer spent a lot of thought on the panels and materials. The primary color scheme of white and light blue light gauze possesses wonderful translucency under the illumination of light and shadow. The most ingenious part should be those deep blue streamers extending from the waist to below the skirt hem, or even drifting outside the overall silhouette. These long streamers will present a highly elegant dynamic beauty in post-processing or a windy environment. Combined with the lace trim on the skirt edges and the drape of the white semi-transparent long skirt hem, the entire look carries a floating nimbleness akin to a jellyfish drifting in the deep sea.
Besides the exquisite nature of the costume itself, the scene construction this time also added a lot of points to the overall atmosphere. The deep blue background wall itself presses the color tone very steadily, while the large area of light blue and white artificial hydrangeas on both sides forms a rich contrast of layers. Especially those white semi-transparent spherical jellyfish props on the top right of the frame, along with the hanging tassel lines below, happen to echo the visual direction of those streamers on my skirt hem. The ground is covered with a white faux-snow plush blanket; during shooting, stepping on it barefoot or wearing light grey high heels makes that cold yet soft texture much harder to balance than looking at the pictures.
When shooting this set of photos, the photographer's control over light and shadow was highly important. Because the material of this clothing values light transmission immensely, the soft light on set was beaten very evenly to present this kind of brightening effect that almost looks like carrying a built-in reflector board in the photos. Especially the fluffy supporting sense of the skirt hem relies heavily on the lighting to outline the silhouette and layers of the sheer tulle. This is exactly why this set of images looks like it has a very clean and translucent "fairy-like" feel.
I share the same sentiment regarding the mention of "both the ice/snow version and the scrapped drafts look especially beautiful" in the post. During the try-on process, I did see quite a few of the artist's early concept drafts; those attempts at different blue color scales proved that this final landed white primary visual version indeed yields the optimal effect. The costume designer's re-creation of character charm can truly make cosplay itself glow with a brand-new vitality distinct from the original illustrations. Wearing such a set of clothes and standing within the setup makes you sincerely marvel at the power of design.
The final official photos present a blue tone that is unified and delicate, beautifully preserving the character's own cuteness and energy within the quiet cool color scheme. This period of experience, whether preparing the hair/makeup, designing movements, or communicating the aura with the photographer, allowed me to find a lot of joy in the interpretation of this blue and white outfit for this piece of themed photography, resulting in an excellent Anime-style girl photo set.
