For the May Day Firefly ACG Expo, I chose to cosplay characters from both Azur Lane (Azur Lane cosplay) and Honor of Kings (Honor of Kings cosplay). The on-site atmosphere truly left a deep impression on me; beyond the organization and layout of the convention itself, the highlight was meeting so many fellow fans who share the same love for the 2D subculture. Conventions are truly the closest bridge to the 2D world. Every time I slip into a carefully prepped cosplay costume, put on the wig and accessories, I feel an authentic connection forming between reality and fantasy.
The photos I'm sharing this time cover four distinct scenes: outdoor areas, the beach, staircases, and indoor exhibition halls. As a regular convention-goer, I pay close attention to how lighting renders the textures of cosplay outfits. For instance, under harsh outdoor sunlight, light-colored wigs and hair accessories easily overexpose, demanding high camera dynamic range and reliable fill-light gear. Using Yongnuo equipment for cosplay photography is genuinely convenient; amidst chaotic convention lighting, it allows precise light control to bring out the textures of embroidery, beaded strings, and metallic hardware on the costumes. I also love capturing dynamic moments—like shading the sun with a fan or kneeling by the seaside—which feel far more vibrant than rigid standing poses.
Looking back at that May Day event, I presented two styles with vastly different aesthetics. One was a casual, sporty blue-and-white semi-casual look featuring thigh bands and athletic elements (incorporating a stylish stocking outfit aesthetic); the other was an ornate red New Year-themed look holding a "Gong Xi Fa Cai" festive scroll, rich with celebration. The cosplayers at the venue were wonderfully friendly, trading freebies and swapping official and custom merchandise. To me, this interaction is the core joy of conventions—not just taking pictures, but gathering together with kindred spirits.
July summer break is already just around the corner, and the first half of the year has flown by in a flash. The thought of stepping into that familiar convention hall again, surrounded by the signature scent of props and makeup in the air, already sparks a quiet thrill. For the summer Firefly ACG Expo pass, I will once again choose characters from my most beloved franchises. However, as the weather grows hotter, figuring out how to maintain costume integrity and intricate detail while staying comfortable all day is a puzzle requiring advance planning. I've already begun researching new wig styling and colorways, aiming to explore makeup aesthetics I haven't tried before.
Cosplaying at conventions is certainly a test of physical stamina, especially when navigating crowded halls in heavily decorated garments or high-heeled boots. Yet seeing those frozen moments captured in photos makes every ounce of effort feel worthwhile. In these photos—whether wielding a black folding fan on the stairs or close-ups against a snowy-white backdrop—I hope to faithfully convey the character's genuine presence. We always encounter hiccups at conventions—loose parts, messy wigs, or tricky lighting angles—yet these little episodes often turn into fond memories.
Heading out once again, I'll bring along more versatile photography gear and practical heat-relief essentials, hoping to deliver an even more captivating visual experience this midsummer.
