Today's private photoshoot for Hikawa Sayo finally wrapped up smoothly, so I wanted to quickly document the styling and makeup process during a break. Friends familiar with this character know she possesses a distinctive aura—composed, slightly aloof, yet remarkably persistent—so I put a lot of thought into recreating that feeling for this shoot. First, about the Blue wig: this greenish-blue hue can easily look off in real life if the tone leans too yellow or gray, often coming across as cheap or unpolished on camera. Because of that, I trimmed the base wig myself in advance, focusing on thinning out the sideburns and micro-adjusting the bangs to flatter my facial proportions. Finally, I styled it with hair wax for subtle dimension, ensuring the hairstyle looked naturally flowing like the original design without turning messy in front of the lens. Under the warm indoor lighting today, the wig carried a delicate sheen, and I was genuinely thrilled with the texture.
For the makeup, to embody her aloof, guarded presence, I deliberately placed the emphasis on the eyes. The base utilized a fair, matte foundation, with restrained contouring aimed primarily at defining the facial structure. The eyes are the soul of the look—wearing Green colored contact lenses, I drew a subtle upward flick on the eyeliner and deepened the outer corners with eyeshadow. Alongside meticulously drawn lower lashes, this enlarged the eyes while preserving a cool, sharp gaze. The blush was kept very subtle with just a touch of soft pink dusted across the cheeks, and the lips wore a matte, understated lip tint to minimize lip presence and direct full visual focus toward the eyes.
In terms of wardrobe, I opted for a classic sailor suit featuring a crisp white top with a dark collar and ribbon tie. I adjusted the tie multiple times to ensure flawless symmetry on camera and carefully smoothed out any creases beforehand. Because this was taken from a close Sailor uniform selfie perspective, both the costume details and the makeup were captured with crisp clarity. During a break, I happened to be eating a biscuit stick and casually held it between my lips as a prop to loosen up my facial expressions. Surprisingly, seeing an aloof character nibbling on a snack created a delightful gap-moe effect; rather than maintaining a stern face the entire time, this candid shot felt far more dynamic and brought the character to life.
Cosplay is honestly an exhausting endeavor—from selecting outfits and trimming wigs in pre-production to styling the makeup and adjusting on-site lighting on the day, every detail requires hands-on dedication. Hikawa Sayo holds special significance for me; her dedication to the guitar and her unwavering focus on stage always provide fresh inspiration whenever I portray her. Even though these were just simple Sailor uniform selfie shots, being able to convey my interpretation and love for the character through the lens is immensely fulfilling. Straightening out the wig and packing up my gear now—exhausting as today was, seeing the final shots made every bit of effort worth it.
