[Yashio Rui cosplay] BanG Dream! Morfonica Cool-Toned Record: White Uniform & Red Eyes

Here is a teaser preview retouched from the Yashio Rui shoot. Honestly, I have fallen so far behind on my editing backlog that I can barely keep up; I had to finish this one photo first and hurry on to the others. I didn't expect this Rui shoot to turn out so well—especially compared to my recent sets, the result was surprisingly good. As every cosplayer knows, changing characters is almost like getting a whole new face, so I put an immense amount of effort into hair and makeup. The red lenses paired with deliberately deepened reddish blending around the eyes maximized that slightly melancholic, detached aura. To add depth to the gaze, I also added subtle highlights and shading at the inner and outer corners of the eyes to make them look more vivid.

The costume details are thoroughly captured as well: a white nurse cap paired with a stand-collar, short-sleeved white uniform, a black-and-gold feather brooch on the chest, golden chains, double-breasted buttons, a skirt hem with deep blue stripes and gold fringe, plus glossy black leather gloves. The overall texture and layering are very distinct. The glossy black leather gloves create a striking visual contrast against the crisp white uniform, delivering stronger visual impact. For the location, I chose an indoor set featuring white wrought-iron window frames, decorated with plenty of blue-and-white faux floral arrangements and white birdcages. Sitting on the white sofa with the backlight streaming through naturally created a cool-toned, ethereal dreaminess.

To highlight the mood, I pushed the overall color grading toward a cool palette, letting the red eyes and reddish eye makeup serve as the focal point, while preserving authentic skin texture without over-smoothing, striving for a balance between retouching and natural realism. I actually tested several color grading passes; at first, I tried a higher-contrast look, but found it ruined the softness of the frame, so I ultimately settled on a low-saturation, cool-toned palette. The blue-and-white bouquets and white birdcages look sophisticated under the cool lighting. To avoid harshness, I infused a touch of cyan-blue into the shadows while keeping pure whites in the highlights. The composition framed the subject with surrounding flower clusters in the foreground.

Trimming the wig was another major focus. To accurately match the character's short hair design, the layers were cut delicately, and I styled subtle outward flips using wax to keep the silhouette natural and lively. During the shoot, capturing that quiet, composed temperament required fine-tuning the direction of the gaze and hand placement for quite a while before achieving this contemplative posture. The ambient light was a bit harsh on the day of the shoot, so we used diffusion panels to soften the glare, resulting in this soft, translucent finish.

Honestly, this Morfonica aesthetic is perfect for exploring expressive lighting. I've been endlessly shooting and retouching lately, feeling stretched thin between a massive batch of photos and obsessive attention to detail. When editing this shot, I intentionally blurred and dimmed the sheer background curtains to help the blue-and-white foreground blooms and the subject pop with a greater sense of depth. I often joke with friends that cosplay is a bittersweet path of dedication—from character selection, research, preparing costumes and props, to overcoming awkwardness in front of the lens, and finally spending late nights retouching at the computer, every step tests your patience. But seeing the teaser capture the envisioned mood makes all the effort worthwhile. There is still a mountain of photos waiting to be processed, so I'll drop this teaser and get right back to the editing marathon.
