For this Yozakura twins shoot, we started preparing costumes and props half a month in advance. As Reimu Hakurei Cosplay and Blue Reimu cosplay from Touhou Project, the red-and-blue contrast is an absolute classic. The outfits feature puff sleeves and ruffled designs with heavily layered skirts, where red and blue lace respectively correspond to each character's color tone. The location was chosen beneath cherry blossom trees in a park. To achieve the ideal Yozakura effect at night, we prepared sheer drapery as backdrops and used small luminous props for fill light. As for props, the shide paper streamers were handcrafted, threading folded paper onto black wooden rods, presenting great tactile texture in night shots.
Before shooting, we coordinated on lighting—since night lighting is complex, light placement required extra care. To keep facial features three-dimensional without excessive smoothing, translucent pink-brown colored contacts were chosen. Makeup emphasized eyelash details, with reddish and bluish eyeshadow tones echoing the costumes. When posing, standing postures best highlighted the overall silhouette, especially the contours of the skirts and legs. The White stockings were chosen in a semi-sheer fabric, which, paired with Mary Jane shoes, looked visually elongated. During seated shots, adding glowing cubes lent an ethereal, mystical ambiance. In solo close-ups, partially obscuring the face with cherry blossoms or gently caressing them added rich depth to the composition.
In post-processing, subtle warm light was introduced over the existing cool-toned palette to render the sakura blossoms in soft pink. We avoided over-smoothing skin, preserving authentic texture and wig sheen. Costumes of this style are packed with fine details; folds in the White stockings and lace textures had to be cleanly retouched without blurring. As a fan of twin aesthetics, cosplaying both characters simultaneously and achieving stylistic unity across distinct color palettes was a fantastic experience. Pre-shoot communication was thorough, and the photographer adjusted many angles for us. The shoot ran quite long into midnight; although physically tired, we were thrilled with the results.
Reviewing the finished work, the first full-body standing shot makes an ideal cover: centered composition and natural duo interaction. This shoot was also a test of my retouching habits—preserving clear clothing patterns in night scenes requires meticulous work. In post-processing, the emphasis was on color fidelity and detail retention. To handle high-ISO noise from deep night shooting, I selected clean raw frames and reduced chroma noise. Balancing red and blue costumes in dark environments is tricky, requiring clean color separation to avoid muddy blending. For the White stockings and lace trims, dedicated masks were used for edge sharpening. Though demanding, the shoot fulfilled all expectations. For props, folded paper shide served as posing aids. The overall mood leans cool-toned with a gentle touch of warmth, highlighting the bond between the two.
