The addition of the Gensokyo, Past and Present track in Touhou Project, along with the character implementation of Reisen Udongein Inaba cosplay and Hong Meiling cosplay and the Miracle Wind gacha launch, inspired this photo project. The entire shoot was completed across several distinct stages.
We began with the first shot holding a paper umbrella. We specifically chose a sunny afternoon and utilized backlighting to showcase the translucent texture of the black-and-red lace dress. The paper umbrella featured printed yellow flowers, which paired with the soft lighting to create a clean, refreshing visual. The left and right graphic layouts incorporated bold color blocks and calligraphy typography, faithfully capturing the aesthetic of official promotional posters.
Next was the Reisen set featured on the cover. Purple hair paired with red rabbit ears, an inner white shirt with a red tie, and a prop gun in hand. To convey a sense of menace and intensity, we placed a light array in a dark setting to generate atmospheric light spots. Posing required numerous adjustments on set—paying close attention to gun-handling posture, eye focus points, and avoiding blocking key light sources. Adding a purple frame and vertical bold typography in post-processing made the overall visual remarkably captivating.
Then came the red-haired Hong Meiling dress in a blue-and-white color palette with delicate lace trim. We shot against a dark industrial-style background, utilizing the foreground perspective of a wide-angle lens to accentuate the forward-reaching hand pose, injecting stronger tension into the composition. In post-production, black ink brush textures served as a backdrop paired with gold calligraphy text to evoke a freeze-frame sense of character implementation, which took a substantial amount of editing.
Finally, the nature-themed look with green hair and a streamer-draped tree branch. Set within a leaf-canopied forest where lighting was scattered, we rebuilt facial light and shadow in post. Because this character demands a relatively tranquil presence, poses leaned toward gentle, flowing gestures with streamers, using a green backdrop to unify the color tone.
The layout design and post-processing across this set were all done by myself. The overall styling mimicked game gacha banner interfaces, complete with 'SSR' lettering, five-pointed stars, and varying border thicknesses. When retouching, priority was given to fine-tuning skin texture and facial contours, ensuring they remained natural and integrated seamlessly with raw lighting. Prop textures were also refined, such as metallic glints on the gun and creases on the paper umbrella. We faced quite a few small issues during the shoot—like lace flying out of place on the Hong Meiling set or Reisen's bunny ears occasionally blocking background lights—so a lot of time went into perfecting standing positions and prop angles.
The above covers the shooting and production process of this Cosplay photography project. Despite minor layout imperfections, the photos fundamentally captured the intended aura of each character, serving as a fulfilling personal record.
