The night breeze by the sea was considerably stronger than in the daytime, whipping the ruffled trims and long ribbons of the outfit wildly into the air, which actually created an ideal, dynamic windblown aesthetic. This costume embraces the classic red-and-white palette of Reimu Hakurei Cosplay, tailored from textured, breathable pleated fabric. The stiff underskirt meant I had to tread with extreme caution across the jagged black coastal rocks to avoid tearing the fabric on rough edges. Wearing traditional wooden clogs easily sank into the beach sand; for the first four shots on the rocks, I had to carefully balance on the stone edges, while for the final two Beach photography shots on the sand, I slipped half a shoe off to stand barefoot on the soft sand—the chilly seawater washing over my insteps was genuinely freezing!
Shooting commenced during the blue hour when the sky turned an intense, deep midnight blue, creating unique challenges for Night outdoor photography lighting. The handheld lantern served as a powerful key light, while an off-camera strobe was set up directly in front, making spot metering exceptionally tricky to balance. Placing the light too close caused facial overexposure, while placing it too far left the skirt underlit. To freeze the exact moment the wind lifted the costume, we continually dialed in the light angles and strobe output, testing over a dozen setups before striking the perfect balance. The warm amber glow of the lantern contrasting against the deep cool blue background infused the composition with rich textural depth.
Moving to the sandy beach, the props were swapped for a kagura bell with multicolored ribbons and a wand with an illuminated tip. Because these props swayed vigorously in the wind, maintaining balance required constantly shifting my center of gravity; failing to freeze a pose cleanly before the shutter clicked meant starting over. The single-leg stance with a flick of the wrist in photo #5 in particular demanded intense core strength to keep from swaying over in the gusts. The vast, open environment allowed distant city lights to dissolve into beautiful bokeh circles, lending a touch of warmth to the cool-toned backdrop.
The most challenging aspects of this shoot were controlling micro-expressions and minding wardrobe security. With a short skirt on an open beach under strong directional light, every leg raise and pose had to be executed with precise care. Despite the wind tangling my wig into several knots, photographer Fengzi Yun patiently guided every movement. Capturing these flowing, ethereal, and mystical Cosplay photos honoring Touhou Project made every effort entirely worthwhile.
