The theme for these Convention photos is Reimu Hakurei from Touhou Project in her iconic red-and-white Shrine maiden outfit. Before leaving home, I double-checked three times, telling myself I must behave as a dignified shrine maiden today and definitely avoid flipping off the camera like last time—or else I'd get excommunicated from the Hakurei Shrine! Bringing along the folding long-staff Gohei and the oversized hair ribbon prop left me a bit nervous, as this costume is far more intricate than anything I typically wear.
Putting on this outfit was quite elaborate, taking nearly 40 minutes just to get properly dressed. The oversized bow headpiece, even with wire support, took considerable effort to position so it wouldn't tilt asymmetrically. The lace trims on the sleeves, along with the delicate tassels and beads across the chest, easily tangled and demanded extra care. The layered skirt had great fluff and volume when spinning, but it tousled easily and could trip my steps if I wasn't attentive. Footwear paired flat black Mary Janes with white ruffled lace socks, walking with youthful charm while remaining stable and grounded. For this convention, I specifically trimmed the wig so the bangs and face-framing sideburns sculpted my face, pairing large-diameter color contacts with soft under-eye blush to give my gaze an ethereal, mystical aura.
The convention was bustling with heavy foot traffic, and the venue's lighting was intricate with harsh light spots and a cluttered background. To bypass crowds, the photographer scouted an overhead spotlight area, leveraging a wide aperture to dissolve harsh background glares into soft, clean depth. Cosplay photography is physically demanding—constantly minding the skirt hem from dragging on the floor and avoiding snagging the sleeves on nearby booths. Although the air conditioning was blowing cold, moving around in full regalia still worked up quite a sweat.
To breathe genuine vitality into the shots, the photographer and I coordinated poses beforehand. Photo #4's single-leg kick pose in particular rested all body weight onto one leg while leaning backward, gripping the long staff and Gohei streamers, which tested my equilibrium while maintaining lens awareness. We retook this pose multiple times because the paper streamers kept floating into frame to cover my face or made the silhouette look off-balance. Holding that single-leg stance for several seconds left my leg aching, but the final result was pure joy: the skirt flared out like a blooming flower, delivering peak dynamic energy as if dancing lightly through the shrine grounds. Passing fellow fans cheered me on, creating a heartwarming atmosphere that gave me immense motivation.
With every character portrayal, I dedicate deep thought to refining gestures and micro-expressions with the photographer. Reimu Hakurei embodies shrine maiden dignity blended with free-spirited, nonchalant cheekiness, so expressions can't be stiff—balancing sharp, scrutinizing glances with sweet, gentle smiles. Overall, while the convention shoot was exhausting, the finished image quality and character fidelity made this Reimu Hakurei Cosplay experience from Touhou Project deeply challenging yet thoroughly rewarding.
