[Hong Meiling cosplay] Touhou Project: Anime convention Live Record of the Red-Haired Gatekeeper

The sweltering air of the Anime convention formed a stark contrast with the substantial weight of this Touhou Project Hong Meiling cosplay costume. The overall styling for this character was gorgeous, but exceptionally demanding on stamina. Starting with the costume, the fabric is a green jacquard brocade adorned with intricate gold dragon embroidery, paired with white ruffled lace, and accented around the collar with red and green gemstones and tassels. Because the costume is quite form-fitting, wearing it for long periods felt somewhat tight, and the gemstone ornament on the chest often pressed against my collarbone. The red floral headpiece and pearl pendants were heavy; combined with the long braided Red hair twin tails, they swayed with every step and significantly obstructed my field of vision, demanding extra care especially when looking down.

To align with the character's traits, I deliberately chose green colored contacts to echo the main tone of the outfit, extended the reddish eyeliner at the outer corners of the eyes, and picked a hydrating red lipstick. Managing the wig took a long time, mostly braiding and arranging the bangs to ensure it wouldn't come undone while moving around the busy venue. With the voluminous skirt and high-heeled boots, I had to shuffle slowly in small steps through the crowded venue to avoid stepping on the hem or tripping over nearby cables.

The photoshoot process was incredibly lively. Due to the messy lighting and background at the venue, photographers kept having me switch poses to find good angles. I tried crouching, sitting, and reaching an arm toward the lens to create perspective. As the surrounding crowd grew larger and the space became increasingly packed, someone jokingly yelled, 'Where's security?', instantly drawing laughter. Though a joke, it reflected the sheer enthusiasm at the Anime convention. Fellow fans and photographers around were very cooperative, shielding passersby to clear a small open spot so I could comfortably crouch and pose.

This Hong Meiling styling leans toward a grand, carefree Eastern martial style, requiring poses that convey an effortless sense of dominance. I tried to focus heavily on the gaze, aiming for an expression that looked both tsundere-aloof yet approachable. After shooting all afternoon, repeatedly crouching and standing up to get great shots left my leg muscles trembling, drenched in sweat to the point where even the wig got damp. But precisely because the Anime convention was so bustling and crowded, this level of immersion was deeply thrilling. Post-processing mainly preserved the reflective luster of the gold threads on the costume and slightly boosted overall color vibrancy to make the contrast between green and red pop even more. I'll need to carefully maintain this costume after getting home as some gold threads snagged, getting it ready for an outdoor photoshoot next time.
