The main subject of this White studio photography shoot is Yuyuko from Touhou Project. To highlight the character's traits against a white background, a lot of thought went into the styling beforehand. The wig uses a natural-lustered light pink long straight style, with blunt bangs and sideburns trimmed on both cheeks. To make the hair strands lighter in motion, the amount of styling spray used was kept very restrained. The focus of the makeup is on the eye makeup; pink contact lenses paired with a slightly reddish smudging at the outer corners of the eyes, along with the embellishment of false eyelashes, make the gaze look both spirited and imbued with a bit of the character's unique ethereal feel.
The layers of the clothing are extremely rich, which is also the hardest part of this styling to master. The upper body is an off-the-shoulder white lace top, with a large number of ruffles at the neckline and cuffs. The waist is matched with a light blue waist cincher, edged with pink lace spliced together. The lower body is an asymmetric fluffy light purple large skirt hem, connected on the side with translucent pink-and-white light gauze. The high-slit design was a challenge during shooting, but it allows the overall silhouette to look less dull. To increase the sense of detail, the legs are worn with white lace Stockings, and the shoes are embellished with red flower decorations. The prop in hand is a silver hollowed-out long strip weapon, with great reflective effect, adding some cool-toned metallic texture to the frame.
Because it is shot in White studio photography, the background is very clean, which requires relying entirely on body language and props to support the frame. I tried poses where my body leaned slightly sideways, one hand stretched forward, and the other hand holding a prop, with my gaze staring straight into the lens. The soft light of the white studio hit down, nicely restoring the vividness of the clothing's macaron color scheme while maximizing the translucency of the light gauze. Underfoot is a mirrored floor, and the reflection just fills the blank space in the lower half of the pure white background, making the composition look more complete.
Shooting clothing made of such multi-layered, lightweight materials makes the use of light and shadow crucial. The lighting technician specially adjusted the angle of the main light so that the texture of the lace and the gradient layers of the tulle skirt could be clearly displayed. To capture the dynamic of the skirt hem fluttering up, I repeatedly tried turning and stepping actions. Because of the coordination between the high slit and the mirrored reflection, changing the angle slightly would make the visual impact of the frame completely different. Posing in this outfit for a long time is quite a test of physical strength, but seeing the gloss of the wig and the flow of the skirt hem in the lens, I feel that the preliminary preparation and on-site adjustments were all worth it. This time, no complex background props were used, purely relying on the colors of the character and clothing to make a statement within the white studio, which can also be considered a very pure character expression.
