This Touhou Project Halloween fanon design project has actually been in preparation for quite a while, and today I can finally talk to everyone about the complete shooting details in depth. This time we portrayed two characters, Flandre Scarlet Cosplay and Patchouli cosplay, incorporating some gothic and Halloween elements based on the traditional setting. To fit the holiday atmosphere, we specially found a real-scene studio with vintage wooden bookshelves and stained glass windows, paired with jack-o'-lanterns, candelabras, and spider webs all over the wall; the overall atmospheric vibe matches extremely well.
First, let's talk about Flandre on me. Because it's a fanon design, I chose a Lolita dress leaning towards a red, white, and yellow color blocking. This outfit is extremely rich in layers: the outer layer is a printed skirt hem, with multiple layers of white tulle and lace layered inside. To prevent the petticoat from deforming during long periods of sitting and standing, I deliberately adjusted the skeletal angle of the petticoat inside. The white stockings on my feet paired with pink cross-straps echo that sweet yet slightly yandere maiden feel in the fanon design. The red Mary Jane shoes' straps also need to be wrapped just right to visually elongate the leg lines. For the wig part, I gave the blonde hair very fine curl treatments, paired with a lace soft cap, and did some overall styling set to ensure it doesn't look too messy when moving around in the studio.
Patchouli's styling next to me is completely a different style. The purple-black gothic long dress is extremely heavy-duty, with layered cross-strap hollow-out designs on the chest, and the outer black lace cape features a long train, with shimmering sequins dotted along the edges. The large black witch hat on her head is the soul of the entire matching, with a large number of pearl chains and spider-web lace sewn along the brim. Because the hat is relatively heavy, anti-slip and fixing treatments were done internally. The semi-translucent black stockings on her legs are printed with dark patterns of the moon and stars, paired with black lace-up leather shoes, maximizing the mysterious vibe. In terms of makeup, both of us wore contact lenses—the blonde hair was paired with pinkish eyes, and the purple hair with purple contact lenses. To make them look more vivid in low-light environments, we intensified the treatment of eyelashes and eyeliner in the eye makeup part.
During the shoot, the light in the studio was actually very dark, mainly relying on the candlelight in the environment and a few warm-toned continuous lights for fill lighting. We needed to find the highlight position of the face in this dim environment while also balancing the interaction between the two of us. For example, in the shot sitting on the bar stool, I needed to steady my center of gravity on the stool while completely spreading out the skirt so it wouldn't look cramped. On Patchouli's side, because the dress is very long, I had to help her hold up the skirt hem when walking to prevent stepping on the lace edges. Throughout the shooting process, we tried sitting postures, standing postures, and many close-up angles, hoping to fully convey that intertwined sweet-and-dark atmosphere of the Touhou fanon design through this set of photos.
