To shoot this set of Reimu Hakurei photos, I chose an ancient temple with thriving incense offerings. When I decided to do this look, I wanted to ensure it reflected Reimu's composure as a Gensokyo shrine maiden, while also carrying a touch of the unique divinity and human touch characteristic of Touhou Project. Let me share the look with everyone first: this red and white shrine maiden uniform was specially custom-made by a tailor. To match Reimu Hakurei's classic image, very delicate red piping was done at the neckline and cuffs, paired with that iconic large red bowknot and white plush balls on her head, making the character instantly recognizable at first glance.
The light on the day of the shoot was very subtle, with the sun casting dappled shadows through the eaves of the ancient temple. To highlight the atmosphere of offering prayers, a corner surrounded by curling incense smoke was specially selected. Here's a small shooting tip: let the smoke from the incense sticks diffuse naturally in front of the lens, which happens to shroud the character in a layer of hazy soft light. Although the first few shots looked good, the smoke dispersed as soon as it drifted, and it took several attempts to capture this silky, flowing smoke texture. I used a full-frame camera paired with a prime lens, opening up the aperture wide to completely blur the wooden pillars and lanterns in the background into deep dark tones, so that the visual focus could be completely concentrated on Reimu.
Let me talk about the state in this photo. At that moment, I closed my eyes and put my hands together in prayer. In fact, my mind was completely free of distracting thoughts, as if I had truly entered that pure realm of Gensokyo. Although shooting in this outfit was a bit stuffy and hot, this moment of calming down actually helped me better capture Reimu Hakurei's charm. In the world-building of Touhou Project, although Reimu is usually carefree and casual, she shows a uniquely serious side when handling shrine affairs and exterminating yokai. I wanted to blend this sense of contrast into the photos.
Before shooting this photoset, I intentionally learned more about the world-building of Touhou Gensokyo and some character settings. Although there was quite a bit of pressure to restore such a classic character, in order to match the imagination of the Gensokyo atmosphere in my mind, many adjustments were made to the props and movement details. For instance, the posture of the hand gesture was not just ordinary hands clasped together, but maintained an elegant and dignified sense of ritual.
Post-processing photo editing was also a massive project. The lighting contrast of the raw photos was quite bright. To enhance that sense of quiet and profound depth, I darkened the overall color tones while preserving the highlights of the red and white costume. The details of the smoke were brightened separately to make it look more translucent and three-dimensional. The entire shooting and post-processing took almost two whole days, and seeing the final images bring out the desired sense of prayer gives me a great sense of achievement. I hope this photoset carrying the scent of sandalwood allows you to feel that unique tranquility within Touhou Project's Gensokyo.
