For this shoot, we chose a Yozakura setting, utilizing cool blue side-backlight to accentuate Saigyouji Yuyuko's ethereal and poignantly tragic aura from Touhou Project (Touhou Youyoumu ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom). For hair and makeup, a soft pink wig was thinned out and styled, paired with grey-blue colored contacts. The makeup focused primarily on the lower eyelids, using transparent gel to craft a teardrop effect that remained crystalline and glistening under the lights. The costume featured a light blue lace dress adorned with multi-tiered ruffles along the hem, a tie neckline, and a handmade floral mob cap headdress that added rich textural depth. The prop was a black-and-red folding fan with deeper tones, balancing out the extensive pink hues of the background.
During shooting, smoke was released beside the cherry blossom trees to heighten the hazy, dreamlike atmosphere, while a diffusion filter was attached to the lens to produce a gentle highlight bloom. Because the environment was dim, reflectors were used to fill in facial shadows, and we adjusted the aperture several times to blur out the background blossoms while catching the subtle glint of the teardrops. In post-processing, the saturation of the background flowers was lowered to emphasize the subject's cool tones, creating a compelling warm-and-cool contrast to establish a Cool-toned atmosphere.
When capturing photos in such a moody, dark ambiance, expression control is paramount: maintaining focused composure in the eyes without casting an overly sharp or aggressive gaze. The positioning of the folding fan was adjusted repeatedly to avoid obscuring the lace detailing on the skirt. Amidst the night breeze, accompanied by the drifting smoke and lighting, we captured several deeply emotional moments despite physical fatigue. The layered skirt of the outfit required careful arrangement while moving, aligning camera angles so that the lace along the hem cast a delicate, translucent curve in the dim light. The transition between the wig bangs and the mob cap was firmly secured with hairpins and hairspray to ensure no seams were visible from the side.
Throughout the shoot, the gaffer adjusted the angle of the blue lighting to ensure facial contours stayed defined without rendering skin tones overly pale or lifeless. For photos steeped in classical elegance, practical control over color and lighting layout on set is essential—one cannot simply rely on cranking up contrast in post. The final visual result is serene, ethereal, and tinged with subtle sorrow, perfectly harmonizing with the character's ephemeral presence. Overall, this photo set beautifully captures a dreamlike vision beneath the Yozakura.
